This is a plausible and interesting account of how a western muslim follows the path of muslim faith into extremism and into the famous training camps of afghanistan.
The author did all this in the name of Western Intelligence and yet it is blatantly obvious throughout the book he enjoys his faith, the beliefs and ultimately is often confused about who he is, what he is working for and where his loyalty lies.
If you can take a dispassionate view of the book it is extremely easy to see where the draw and attraction is and what the author discovers is nothing new to any service man and what they discover on joing a military force. The comradship, the shared trials and tribulations , the sense of belonging is all here.
There are also many intersting aspects to this book from the incompetence of the intelligence services to the endless internal muslim conflict amongst factions, sunni etc. and interpretations and support for those beliefs and actions derived from them. The whole section about the wavering support for the brutal GIA in Algeria and the view they have of Iraq and Iran show that not only will they never prevail because of their own never ending internal power struggles but why we will never truly suppress those of the redical muslim faith due to their strong culture of belief. I think this book truly does allow for the reader to understand for the first time the chaos of the Jihad and the types of Jihad and what they mean for the us as westerners. Top Book and a very interesting person. Shame that religion and bigots from both sides have created this world devide. A Must read of any intelligence analyst i would have thought.
