'This delightful addition to the genre really stands out from the pack . . . You don't have to be a dog person to enjoy this absorbing book'
--BBC Wildlife

Product Description

As an unabashed dog lover, Alexandra Horowitz is naturally curious about what her dog thinks and what she knows. As a cognitive scientist she is intent on understanding the minds of animals who cannot say what they know or feel. This is a fresh look at the world of dogs -- from the dog's point of view. The book introduces the reader to the science of the dog -- their perceptual and cognitive Abilities -- and uses that introduction to draw a picture of what it might be like to be a dog. It answers questions no other dog book can -- such as: What is a dog's sense of time? Does she miss me? Want friends? Know when she's been bad? Horowitz's journey, and the insights she uncovered from studying her own dog, Pumpernickel, allowed her to understand her dog better, and appreciate her more through that understanding. The reader will be able to do the same with their own dog. This is not another dog training book. Instead, Inside of a Dog will allow dog owners to look at their pets' behaviour in a different, and revealing light, enabling them to understand their dogs and enjoy their relationship even more.

Reading this book made my look at my dog's behaviour in a different light. With so much tv focused on dog behaviour, most of which I found to be questionable, I was looking for soemthing that would explain how or why my dog does what she does for good or bad. This book has it! From debunking the myth that we are the dog's pack to why some dogs are good at agility to why novelty is so important to dogs and why dogs are a second (or two) ahead of us. I would highly recommend this book to any dog owner.

for dog lovers 23 Feb 2011

I was really looking forward to reading this book, and have been slightly disappointed. There are, indeed, some really interesting facts, some funny and some touching anecdotes. However, I feel that you rather have to trawl through quite a lot of verbosity to reach them and I also find it infuriating that quite a few of the interesting anecdotes are given as footnotes! You cannot rely on just reading the footnotes, though, as you will miss some entertaining facts. This book could have done with a more radical edit to make it an excellent book on understanding dogs. I would have liked to have seen a photo of Pump.

I have two dogs, both Border Collies. The second of them was a stray I took in about two years ago which had been abandoned near to where I live. Apart from being half-starved, he came with more emotional baggage than I ever thought possible - frightened of people, other dogs, cars, the vacuum cleaner and even of having his photograph taken to name but a few and when he's frightened, he bites - or did, he's now much more confident. Because of him, I have read literally dozens of books about the inner workings of dogs. This particular book was recommended to me by the Canine Behavourist who advises me and is by far the best I have read. The amount of information is considerable, much of which I have not read elsewhere and yet it is not difficult reading. I would recommend it to anybody who has a dog whether it has problems like mine or not.

Not a treatise
This is not a scientific treatise and reads as if the author was put under pressure from an editor to make it all approachable. Read more

Interesting...
As part of a canine library it makes an interesting addition, but not as a stand-alone. Not enough substance or information, but pleasant reading.
