This brief booklet is a discussion of the merits of formative assessment. Based on the research of published data carried out by Paul Black and Dylan Wiliam it gives a clear picture of the potential benefits of using formative assessment.

It is not intended to instruct or teach formative assessment but as a starting point to initiate debate in schools about introducing this style of assessment.

To any teaching professional interested in improving the education of their pupils this is a must read booklet.

This (and its sequel) are gold dust for staff developers and hard pressed educational professionals. Pity it didn't include a section on impressing it upon ultra conservative staff. Could undo much of the poor 'target based' education which has so devalued our English children.
