Review

"I had a great time reading Kuzhali Manickavel's Insects Are Just Like Us Except Some Of Them Have Wings. The stories are well written, of course, but what really gets you is the variety, the sheer unpredictably of them... You just can't say which way a story will turn."
--Kala Krishnan Ramesh

'Not merely lyrical and strange, but also deadpan funny' --Miranda July, India.

5.0 out of 5 stars Kuzhali Manickaval Has Wings 16 Oct 2008
By Mark Jacobs - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
The stories of "Insects Are Just Like You and Me Except Some of Them Have Wings" are like well-remembered dreams. They are frustratingly elliptical and playfully topsy-turvey in their abandonment of mundane reality, yet sufficiently vivid and subtle to provide that delicious moment of doubt about the dreaming/waking, imaginary/reportorial dichotomies which make us feel in control of our lives.

This is a wonderful read!

5.0 out of 5 stars Best new writing I've seen this year 9 Sep 2008
By Valerie E. Polichar - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
By turns funny, surreal, philosophical and poignant, Manickavel's outstanding collection of short stories is also stunningly original. She successfully blends elements of surrealism and magic realism with a rich sense of place, and she has a true gift for writing dialogue. I can't recommend this book highly enough.
5.0 out of 5 stars Such surreal beauty! 27 Feb 2012
By Michael A. Duvernois - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
After having read some short stories and entries in Kuzhali Manickavel's blog (which you MUST check out, amazon will delete a link, but Google will find it for you, hint: third world ghetto vampire), I had to track down her book. It appears to be published by a firm best known for Bengali Romance novels. Fitting. Manickavel is darned close to my favorite new writer now. Everyone I show this surreal, oddity-filled, beautiful book to wants a copy.
