This is an absolutely outstanding album from one of the most gifted but underrated artists of all time. Often passed over in the context of the group's vast discography, "Insanus..." is perhaps the best jumping-on point for those unfamiliar with Christian Death. Every conceivable style and atmosphere is covered, from dark opera to grinding rock, from love to hate. That, of course, is one of the most exciting things about this not-so-merry band of minstrels: one can always expect the unexpected. "Insanus..." gives Valor the chance to indulge his penchant for classical flourishes on a grand scale, with lush orchestrations provided by the man himself as well as the English Abbey Choir and Chamber Orchestra, which he conducted. Every track on here is an utter gem in its own right, yet they all fit together perfectly to form a cohesive whole which is simply awe-inspiring in the grandeuer of its vision and execution. From the philosophical ruminations and sinister sounds of "Malus Amor" to the beautifully uplifting "Mors Voluntaria" nothing is amiss. This is art of a most passionate and sincere nature, a gothic-classical melange which is nevertheless surprisingly accessible at times. Ignore all imbecilic comments about this band and its leader. Here, yet again, Valor adroitly proves himself as a veritable musical genius who is driven and 100% committed to his ouevre. His poetic, metaphorical lyrics exude intelligence and his arrangements beat the competition hands down. This album cannot be described in terms of comparisons. It is unique, and for that reason alone, it deserves a place in your collection. Long may Christian Death continue!

4.0 out of 5 stars Dark opera, dark poetry 4 Oct 2003
By Jay Ash
Format:Audio CD
I definitively like this album. Every song add to the athmosphere of the album. The begining of the album is like a dark opera, the songs Somnium and Venenum are the climax and more traditional from Christian Death finally Mors and Vita Voluntaria are pure grave athmosphere to chill you to the last note. The album makes a very coherent and poetic piece.

5.0 out of 5 stars A magnificent collection of songs! 7 Sep 2000

Oddly, this collection of outtakes from Valor's Christian Death is among the band's best albums. It opens with the incredible "Sevan-Us-Rex", a dark piece that combines orchestral instrumentation, a male vocal chorus, and Valor's interesting experimentation with sound and voices. This is followed by "Malus Amor", a rock track driven by a wonderful rhythmic bassline and accented by occassional orchestral production. "Tragicus Conatus" is one of Valor's trademark experimental tracks, this time using orchestral instrumentation and production to create a quite haunting piece. "Vexatio" is another great rock track, this time driven by an excellent lead guitar line rather than bass, with a nice experimental interlude section in the middle. Then comes "Somnium", a very beautiful rock track with a chorus that features an emotional string (or keyboard) section. The lyrics are also great on this track, qualifying it as one of Valor's most emotionally stirring light rock songs to date. "Venenum" returns to faster rock, with the welcome addition of Gitane Demone's vocals doubled with Valor's throughout the song. It is well-written, well-performed, and well-produced (with subtle layers of instruments weaving around eachother in the background). "Mors Voluntaria" is another experimental piece that combines orchestration with experimental loops, noise, and a few metal guitar riffs with vocals, leading into "Vita-Voluntaria", a lighter piece that very effectively combines organ with ethereal orchestral and choral backgrounds. The bonus track, "Infans Vexatio", is a version of "Vexatio" with alternate lyrics and vocals (I think) by Rozz Williams...and also a different experimental interlude section. It is a welcome bonus track, actually better than the original album version.
Basically, my advice is to buy this album! It is just as good as any Christian Death singles compilation I have heard while also accomplishing the feat of retaining the flow of a proper album. Incredible!
