Product Description

Product Description

This book is suitable for undergraduates and postgraduates on a wide range of courses from marketing, strategic management, business studies and engineering.

The subject of innovation management is often treated as a series of separate specialism’s, rather than an integrated task. The main aim of this book, however, is to bring together the areas of innovation management and new product development and to keep a strong emphasis on innovation as a management process.

Written in an accessible style, this title sets three key areas for the student: Innovation management, managing technology and knowledge and new product development.

As innovation continues to be at the forefront of economic and political debate about how to improve the competitiveness of economies and firms, Innovation Management and New Product Development will give you some insight into the problems faced by firms as they try to develop innovative products that will help them survive and prosper. This new edition includes new large sections on entrepreneurship, process innovation and counterfeit and imitation. Also this edition includes brand new cases covering new developments in the industry including CSI-DNA Fingerprinting, folding shipping containers.

From the Back Cover

Innovation Management and New Product Development, 5th edition

Most of the significant inventions of the past two centuries have not come from flashes of inspiration but from collaborative endeavours. This book argues that innovation is a management process that continues to be at the forefront of economic and political debate about how to improve the competitiveness of economies and firms.

Innovation Management & New Product Development 5e offers an accessible and authoritative multi-functional perspective on innovation management and new product development. Its clear and informed coverage of the management processes of new product development, coupled with a practical orientation of taking you through real life challenges and dilemmas, results in a book that brings together the most up-to-date and accessible discussion of the literature in this area, as well as a wealth of examples and illustrations in every chapter.

New to this edition

Ø      Thoroughly revised and updated chapters including new coverage of entrepreneurship, process innovation and counterfeit and imitation goods

Ø      New case studies on CSI and genetic fingerprinting, and Sony Blu-Ray as well as updated case studies including Apple, eBay and Gore-Tex®

Ø      New 'Innovation In Action' feature in every chapter – practical examples of innovation in action that help you to link theory with practice

Innovation Management 25 Mar 2011
Format:Paperback
I have the opportunity to study the subject of Innovation and New Product Development with the author of this book at University of Portsmouth. I bought several textbooks on the same subject and had the ability to compare them. I would say that this one covers all the basic syllabus and at the same time focuses on the important theory in more detail. I particularly liked the links with history of innovation and major discoveries throughout the latest centuries. It is an easy to read book with a lot of examples to explain the frameworks.

A great read 23 Oct 2011
Format:Paperback
I bought this because I had to - it was a set text on a course I was doing. Being a bit of a rebel, I didn't read it much during the course, but one day I took it to an audition - I was queueing with my ten-year-old, who wanted a part in a movie. I got into Chapter 6 and was hooked. Trott knows his stuff, and explains it very lucidly, in an exquisite balance between practicality and academic rigour.

The Third Edition dealt with the Guinness Widget as a major case study - the Fourth Edition (the one I bought) has the widget patent as an appendix. The main case study has been replaced with Viagra, another epic. Trott gets you in there, if he ever wants to leave academia behind, he could do fiction or journalism (if there is any distinction) .... His stuff on Cork (wine bottles, not Ireland) is first-rate also. You really feel for the guys who have planted trees 40 years ahead, faced with the various disruptive innovations in wine closure.

Some day I will finish this book, what I have already read has well justified the investment.

Who Came Up With That 19 Feb 2010
By Paul Hanrahan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
I bought this book as a requirement for an MBA class titled "Management of Innovation/Technology." Beyond reading Paul Trott's Innovation Management and New Product Development to satisfy class requirements is my personal involvment in innovation and technology. Paul Trott's text helped me to understand the company I worked for many years ago and the role I have played since when consulting. Paul Trott provides a valuable perspective for anyone who is involved in research and development in a corporate, or for that matter, academic setting.

If you find yourself, due to pursuing a passion for some subject (computer virtualization in my case), in a position where you are helping to develop, market or finance something that will make customers ask themselves "Who came up with that neat ideat" then you should read Mr. Trott's book. Mr. Trott provides insight into the different types of innovation that companies engage in, the lifecycle of new products and how organizations use their intellectual and technological assets to their advantage as well as customers and even society at large.

A useful textbook 18 Oct 2006
By Murat Bengisu - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
I am using this book as a textbook for an elective course (Innovation Management) in our Industrial Engineering curriculum. It is a comprehensive up to date book. I only manage to use a few chapters since it covers many important areas of innovation management. I recommend it to other academicians, to students and to those who are interested in various aspects of innovation management.
