Book Description

A preacher is found brutally murdered in a Tennessee motel room.

A beautiful, mysterious young girl is accused.

In this bestselling debut, criminal defense lawyer Joe Dillard has become jaded over the years as he's tried to balance his career against his conscience. Savvy but cynical, Dillard wants to quit doing criminal defense, but he can't resist the chance to represent someone who might actually be innocent. His drug-addicted sister has just been released from prison and his mother is succumbing to Alzheimer's, but Dillard's commitment to the case never wavers despite the personal troubles and professional demands that threaten to destroy him.

"Pratt's richly developed characters are vivid and believable, especially the strong Southern women who fight their male-dominated culture from behind a facade of vulnerability in this brilliantly executed debut." -- Publisher's Weekly

"It’s Scott Turow and Grisham... The opening chapter is maybe the most compelling I’ve read in a decade.” – Ken Bruen

Smart and sophisticated, with a plot twist that will leave you shaking your head in wonder, "An Innocent Client" -- the first in the acclaimed Joe Dillard series -- will also leave you begging for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Restores faith in amazing crime writing 14 Dec. 2012
By Legs11
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love crime literature, it's my favourite genre. I have been finding lately that most of the big boys and girls seem to be "writing by numbers" everything so formulaic it was not a pleasure to read. This book was outstanding and I do not give this praise lightly. Well crafted characters, very pacey, an absolute pleasure to loose sleep reading. Cornwell, Coben, Grisham; take notes y'all, Mr Pratt is dogging your heels, it's time you finally raised your games!

4.0 out of 5 stars A very enjoyable read 23 Jun. 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
It's always a bit of a gamble when trying an author you haven't read before - however, in this Scott Pratt novel my gamble paid off and I was rewarded with a rather good read. It kept me engaged, the story flowed quite nicely and he didn't do masses of waffle to show how much he knows about the law - I think he got the level of 'factual bits' just right. In my humble opinion, many authors fall into the trap of using a novel to show off their knowledge of a particular topic and forget that the point of a fictional novel is to entertain, not educate - that's what academic text books are for. I've bought his next two Dillard novels and look forward to reading them. I'd certainly recommend having a read of Mr Pratt's books - most enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thumbs up for Scott Pratt !!! 31 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition
This is the first book in the Joe Dillard series of legal thrillers by Scott Pratt. It is also the first book by this author that I have ever read.

Joe Dillard is a criminal defence attorney, that is he defends murderers, thieves, drug dealers, prostitutes and rapists among others. Although he has made a lot of success in this career, he is now fed up of defending such scumbags. Having now saved a considerable amount of money, he wants to quit the legal profession permanently but before that he wishes to defend at least one innocent client.

A preacher, Rev. John Paul Tester is found murdered and mutilated in a motel room. Phil Landers, a Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) special agent is sent to investigate. On checking the whereabouts of the preacher, Landers finds that the victim, although a man of God, had visited a strip club the night before. From there all leads point to a young beautiful waitress, Angel, who had been seen serving the victim in the club that night. She is immediately arrested on first degree murder charges. The club's wealthy owner, Erlene, being a close friend of Angel and knowing Joe Dillard to be one of the best attorneys around, pays him a hefty sum and hires him to defend her employee.

Dillard is convinced that Angel is innocent and is prepared to use all his skills and do everything in his power to defend her. But he finds many obstacles in the way and by the end his sanity and his life are put in jeopardy on more than one occasion. Will he be able to save Angel from death row? Is she really telling all the truth? What really happened in that motel room that night?

Apart from this case, Joe has to deal with his very own demons which continually return to haunt him from the past.

4.0 out of 5 stars Good but sometimes a leap of faith. 30 Mar. 2013

I thought the overall storyline was very good but I was a little perplexed with has fast Dillard slumped into despair. There didn't seem to be any run up to it but suddenly he was questioning why he was bothering. Having said that, I enjoyed the storyline and would buy more of the series. I do enjoy a good court drama or crime thriller and this offers both.

There is a lot to recommend "An Innocent Client," and it is a multi-layered and engaging legal thriller that is nevertheless easy to follow.
As well as having a strong core concept and very believable characterizations, it flows well, is well edited, and always leaves you waiting to see what will happen next at the end of each chapter in a way that is of course as enjoyable as it is infuriating!

Those that enjoy John Grisham will certainly enjoy this book, although it would be wrong to assume due to this that the author does not have his own voice, or that that story is rather cookie-cutter or "in the style of."

highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars I really enjoyed this book 14 Nov. 2014
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I really enjoyed this book. I admit it first caught my eye because of the coincidence of a shared surname but the reviews were encouraging and so I purchased! I do enjoy a good legal/courtroom drama and was a well thought through and plotted story. This story does not have the grittiness of Joseph Teller's tales but they are just as good as anything by Steve Martini, especially his earlier books.

The only real mystery, to me, was the very final page where the author explains that this is a self published book and he'd appreciate a review on Amazon to help promote the books. I am more than happy to do so, my puzzle is why no published has not taken up his books and promoting them in bookshops? They are certainly good enough. I have also read book #2 and have the third ready to read.

I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Nice to have a likeable leading character for a change. And I appreciated the lack of the profanities which disfigure too many novels.
