Product Description

"Sunday Times" bestselling author, Kathleen Tessaro returns with a stunning new novel that will be a big hit with fans of her debut success "Elegance". It's 1987 and Evie is leaving home for the first time, headed for London to study acting. Along with her fellow students and roommates, Imogene (a born again Laura Ashley poster child and frustrated virgin) and Robbie (native New Yorker, budding bohemian, and very much not a virgin), Evie's determined to make her mark both on stage and off. But then life and love, in the shape of struggling rock musician Jake Albery, intervene. And everything changes. Fourteen years later and Evie's stuck. She's now a single mother teaching drama classes, her dreams long since abandoned. Robbie's dead, killed in car accident and Imo's lost touch. Then a friendship from the past comes to haunt Evie. Literally. And suddenly everything is about to change again.

2.0 out of 5 stars Signifying Nothing, 27 Jul 2006
By Kate B (Wellington, New Zealand) - See all my reviews
This is disposable frothy fiction, with the added angle of the theatrical world and the struggles of an amateur actor. Evie flies to England to follow her dreams of becoming an actress, and has a great time as a student, living the bohemian lifestyle. When she becomes pregnant, can't get a job and realises her no-good boyfriend, Jake, is actually a drug pusher, the rose-tinted glasses fall away.

Years later as a single mother teaching drama and living with an eccentric old lady and a house full of artistic lodgers, she is literally haunted by an old friend and made to make some radical changes. Of course there is Piotr, a strong and handsome musician to take care of her, and she is inspired to follow her dreams and forget about her broken heart, even when her old flame turns up to rekindle the passion of the past.

It's all rather formulaic, but there are some amusing anecdotes from acting classes, as the drama students try to perform the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet or Hamlet's indecisive soliloquy in new and interesting ways. It's not necessary, however, to pad out the novel with the entire soliloquy as anyone with even rudimentary knowledge of Shakespeare knows what comes after "To be or not to be", and if they don't, they'll skim it anyway.

When Evie explains to her son, Alex, that his father loves him, she tells him that he sends all good things his way "Like warm sunny days or Michael Owen scoring a goal or when you lose a toy and you think it's gone for ever and then suddenly you find it again". These moments of chummy contemporary culture sit incongruously alongside distilled attempts at profundity. "There's a peace that comes from the integrity of self that the rough fortunes of happiness can't touch. But it can only be paid for in acts of courage."

Kathleen Tessaro is not exactly wrestling Marian Keyes' crown of chick lit from her grasp, but she might make a runner-up in the pageant. She writes, "There are no great fanfares for the truly great moments of your life. Just dripping taps and the sound of your own footsteps, walking from one room into another." This is a kitchen sink drama with some very clunky metaphors.

The best thing about the novel was the quote from the Guardian on the jacket; "This is the 30-plus equivalent of the coming-of-age novel: a coming-awake novel for women who have wasted their 20s on cheap men and rough wine." The marketers have done their job well, this is seductive and untrue; all bluster and no substance; a fitting tribute.

5.0 out of 5 stars Girly read with a bit of depth, 20 Aug 2005
By A Customer
This review is from: Innocence (Hardcover)
Having been enchanted by the author's Elegance, I picked this up as soon as it came out and wasn't disappointed. Just enough twists and turns to keep you reading but a warm-hearted book written with a delicate touch and interesting perspective. Perfect to read on the commute or the beach, highly recommended.

2.0 out of 5 stars Disappointing, 26 Feb 2006
By sainte-carmen (London) - See all my reviews
(TOP 1000 REVIEWER)
I read Elegance and enjoyed it very much. The author's follow-up effort was a disappointment. I found the prose stilted, the characters unconvincing and the attempt at magic realism unsuccessful. Hopefully, her next effort will be better.
