Biography

‘Influence’ is an apt title for an album from arguably the most underheralded guitar hero on the circuit. Philip Sayce, the Welsh born axe hero, came of age in Toronto, Canada during the 90’s and was weaned on such guitar heroes as Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimi Hendrix, Jeff Healey and Mark Knopfler. “I have such distinct memories listening to these incredible ... I'd heard a couple of tracks from this guitar slinger and, reading the reviews stating "better than Bonamassa" "almost as good as Bonamassa", well, I thought it would be worth a less than £10 flutter to see whether or not the guy is as good as claimed - and is he? You betcha!
Forget the comparison with JB or SRV, just listen to this guy and take it all in. He can rock with the best of the current crop -witness: ARE YOU READY - great hook that'll get into your brain and stay there! - and on the 7 minutes plus LITTLE MISS AMERICA, you hear the fluid bluesy style reminiscent of Mr Trower (I almost said Hendrix!).
The writing, the guitar playing and the vocalisations of this man show categorically, that he is going to scale the dizzy heights too - with, or without the comparisons!
The sleeve notes to this set tell the story of how this unknown artist went to the Rockpalast and blew everyone away - well, listening to the CD and watching the accompanying DVD, I can well hear and see why - can't wait to check him out live as he's got to be way up there with the very best!

I may as well tell you up front that I've been a slave to 'My Pearl' by Automatic Man for more years than I care to remember. So the fact that Canadian raised Welshman Philip Sayce has chosen to cover it on this, his second solo album, means the chances of me saying anything derogatory are pretty slim.

But even if 'My Pearl' wasn't there in all it's glory, then I would still be salivating in a somewhat unseemly manner, as Mr Sayce works his way through a classic seventies Blues-rock album. For sure, it's not perfect, but armed with a good half dozen or so near classic tunes, this is unlikely to be leaving my stereo anytime soon.

Vocally, he's knocked a few riffs off Lenny Kravitz, but his guitar picking is all his own. He's got an incredible band pumping things along, with his touring and recording band - Fred Mandel, Joel Gottschalk and Ryan MacMillan - having done time with the likes of Queen, Supertramp, Alice Cooper and Matchbox 20. And I doubt any of them suffer fools gladly. On the songwriting front he's also pulled in melodic rock legends Richard Marx and Marti Frederiksen, but this sounds like nothing they've done before.

There's a little something for everyone from the Southern Rock styled 'Tennessee Girl' through the Kings X tinged 'Are You Ready' to the nods to Robin Trower on the closing epic 'Little Miss America'. As a sideman, Mr Sayce impressed with Jeff Healey, Uncle Kracker and Melissa Etheridge, but "Innerevolution" is the album that should see him leaping to the forefront of modern Blues rockers. Absolutely essential.

This is Rock and Blues at its best - I tried this with a couple of downloads and was amazed - this guy really does 'make it cry and sing'. I would not go quite so far as to say 'better than Joe Bonamassa' but he's damm good with a fluid style that really rocks - especially on Bitter Monday ..
He's a little more pop orientated than I expected but the guitar work is just superb and the passion is there - and I'll take that any day
Well worth a try - get Bitter Monday and Chances and see what I mean ..

I saw this guy play a few months ago at the 100 CLUB [LONDON], not really knowing anything about him. I'm not joking, and I am someone who has seen the likes of, ' STEVIE RAY VAUGHN ',' JEFF HEALY ',' ROBIN TROWER ',' JEFF BECK ',' JOE BONNAMASSA ',' BEN HARPER ',' MATT SCHOFIELD ',' BUDDY GUY ', the list goes on, this young man completely blew my head off!!!....People, after the gig, were saying it was just like listening to ' HENDRIX '!!!.. Yes he`s THAT GOOD!!!... I'm going to see him again in NOVEMBER at the BORDERLINE, in the meantime I'll have to make do with this wonderful CD/DVD. I strongly urge you to check out his "Live" album (Peace Machine), for a fuller flavour of what this man can do. I wish I was a more gifted word-smith, so I could give him the full written justice he richly deserves. If you enjoy hearing the "Strat" being played well, sell a kidney, no, sell `yer granny, if that's what it takes to get the money to see this man before he goes stratospheric.

I don't much like comparisons such as "better than Joe" and having been lucky enough to see Joe B live in Birmingham just two days ago, it is hard to see how anyone could be judged better than the 2 hours of ear shattering guitar genius that he subjected us to, and I mean genius - but that said, when I played this CD for the first time a week ago (thanks yet again Amazon for another great "if you liked that you'll like this" recommendation), as soon as the first bars of Changes washed over me all the hairs on my arms and neck stood up - the noise is just sublime.

He is clearly an absolute master of the instrument, and I would class his style of rock as very much out of the 70s - raw and ear-filling without overdoing the menacing aggressive bass beat which modern rock seems to suffer from so much. Can't put my finger on why, but it reminds me a little of Pat Travers.

I love it, really happy to have just discovered him, and I'll be buying more. Nobody who likes this genre can fail to be blown away by this. Enjoy!
