Product Description

Lesley Blanch, writer, artist and adventuress, followed her own compass in everything she did. She called herself a romantic traveller; her appetite for the exotic colours all her books. The first, The Wilder Shores of Love, became a worldwide bestseller and is still in print.

Emotions, she insisted, can be transposed to places or countries and in this she was her own best example. Her guiding passion for Russia began in childhood; later she found the 'eternal Slav' in Romain Gary, Franco-Slav diplomat and writer, and with him embarked on a series of postings from Bulgaria to Los Angeles. After their divorce she transferred her obsession to Turkey, Persia and the Islamic East where she travelled widely, with tremendous baggage. She eventually settled on the Côte d'Azur, in a small pink villa dressed as exotically as herself.
Lesley Blanch loved mystery; vivid yet elusive, she hid as much as she revealed and created a legend about her early past. In this first biography, Anne Boston draws on publishers' archives, unpublished journals and conversations with those who knew her, to piece together the portrait of an escapist for whom 'character plus opportunity equals fortune'.

Pamela Blevins (Brevard, NC) I had never heard of Lesley Blanch until a friend in England sent me an early review of Anne Boston's biography. I had to wait some time for it to be available in the US but the wait was worth it. Boston has written a compelling and engaging narrative about a remarkable woman. To me a successful biographer is one who makes his or her subject come alive for a individual who had no prior knowledge or interest in that person. Boston has achieved this goal with her biography of Blanch. The fact that it is unauthorized is a plus. Blanch told her friends not to talk to the author, which tells me that she wanted someone to play by the rules and perhaps perpetuate the myths and misconceptions about the life she herself had created. Boston tells it like it was and, in the process, humanizes her subject, makes her real. Of necessity she sometimes makes an informed guess but leaves it open for for the reader to decide. All too often, authorized biographies tell only one side of the story, the side that fans want to hear and the subject wants to go down in posterity. Unauthorized biographies are, to me, more honest because the author is not inhibited by "authorized" constraints and is free to tell the life as it was.

A great subject meets a worthy biographer and it's all the better for being unauthorised. A lovely read and then pass it on to a female relative or friend who's not too old - and you never are - to set out east (or to any other point of the compass) in search of adventure, real or imagined.

The lady who wrote this book did good research work but she is not up to Lesley's very demanding standards and therefore often misses the point... good try, though.
