Product Description

Product Description

The Gurdjieff tradition, commonly referred to as "The Work," describes people's daily lives as completely mechanical, conducted asleep. Gurdjieff's intent, as with many sacred traditions, was literally to aid in one's awakening. The tools for doing this are many but integrated. The various methods of "The Work" are intended to specifically integrate a person's physical, emotional, and intellectual centers into a fourth way of consciousness. Like Zen, this tradition has been an oral one emphasizing the relationship of teacher to student. But there have also been extensive writings on this tradition, and "The Inner Journey" collects some of the best of these in the form of essays, interviews, and fables. To expand readers' experience and understanding of both Gurdjieff's life and his teachings, the book is bundled with the feature film "Meetings with Remarkable Men, " Peter Brook's critically acclaimed adaptation of the early years of Gurdjieff's search for meaning.

5.0 out of 5 stars Gurdjieff and Parabola, 3 July 2008
By Sharon B. Corcoran - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Inner Journey: Views from the Gurdjieff Work (Parabola Anthology) (Paperback)
I'm very pleased with this book which is an anthology of articles and interviews on the subject of G.I. Gurdjieff and his spiritual system, all taken from past issues of Parabola: the Magazine of Myth and Tradition. What makes it especially good value is the inclusion of a DVD of "Meetings with Remarkable Men", the film of Gurdjieff's early years directed by Peter Brook and Jeanne de Saltzman. The highlight of the film, in my opinion, are the scenes of Gurdjieff's "movements" or sacred dances, performed to his arrangements of folk and sacred music gleaned from his travels.

4.0 out of 5 stars An answer to Beelzebub fatigue, 28 Dec 2008
By J. Young "jray" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Inner Journey: Views from the Gurdjieff Work (Parabola Anthology) (Paperback)
Beelzebub's Tales to his Grandson has been the root of my Gurdjieff reading. This book (as well as In Search of the Miraculous) helps me when plodding along is too much. It helps me appreciate what I don't understand...yet. A very useful read.

4.0 out of 5 stars Fascinating, 16 Oct 2009
By M. LATORRA "Gozen" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: The Inner Journey: Views from the Gurdjieff Work (Parabola Anthology) (Paperback)
Gurdjieff was an idiosyncratic, often obscure but always insightful teacher who brought to the West a teaching he called the Fourth Way. This collection of articles from PARABOLA magazine includes several excerpts from his writings as well as essays written by students of his and religious scholars. As a bonus, this book includes a DVD of the film version of Gurdjieff's book about the early years of his spiritual search "Meetings with Remarkable Men."
