After completing the walk described in this book, I felt I had fully explored and experienced the Lake District - some superb hidden country pubs too. An absolute must for all Lakeland Lovers!

4.0 out of 5 stars Unique walks in the Lakes, 22 Jun 2009
By Perky Duck (Wirral, Merseyside, UK) - See all my reviews
A 90 mile circular walk or 7 individual stages? Whichever way you do it the walks are claimed to be unique. I walked Stage 5 from Boot to Broughton in Furness and was delighted by the route. For the most part the route directions are clear so map-reading skills are not required but this is not always the case. For example the text reads: "......over the saddle in the crags, then heads up to the right (cairns) to run alongside Spothow Gill and drops down to the left over the stream and up over a stile." The path does not go to the right, cairns are not visible from the saddle, you cant know where Spothow Gill is without local knowledge or an OS map, and you cant see a stile because it is hidden behind a stone wall. Of course you can scout around and find your way as I did but you shouldn't need to do so.

The sometimes imprecise and sometimes ambiguous instructions are only a minor irritation. What really annoyed me was the layout of the book. There is a list of pubs, route descriptions, outline sketch maps and then route and yet more pub information. You have to cross- refer all four in advance to get the best from these routes. If you don't do so and only follow the route description you are going to miss "the finest pub in the lake district" because the Blacksmith's Arms doesn't even get a mention, even though it is just over 300 yards from the path.

To sum up then this is a good book spoilt only by a few minor points which hopefully will be addressed in the next edition. I will certainly be walking all the other stages at some point but only after some detailed planning and taking map and compass with me.

5.0 out of 5 stars FANTASTIC BOOK, 22 Nov 2000
By A Customer
I have been on many circular walks based upon scenery, but none based around pubs....I completed Mark Reid,s splendid walk and had the added benefit of getting totally rat arsed in the process.

A great way of spending a week away from the hassles of life!
