Product Description

Book Description

With 6,000km of navigable waterways, the Netherlands offers one of the most extensive yet compact cruising grounds in Europe. This book is a user's guide to the whole network, covering all the mast-up routes and excluding only those waterways which offer less than 3.5m bridge height.

Navigational details are provided for each waterway; comprising dimensions and obstacles to be expected, including service arrangements for bridges and locks. This is followed by details of over 300 stopping places across all twelve provinces; some which are large or popular harbours, and others which are well off the beaten track. Comments on the significant features are expanded for nearly 100 `principal venues' where more details on things to do and see are provided, as well as information on practical facilities ashore and the authors' selective and subjective restaurant tips!

The book is designed to be of interest to all crew members, not just the skipper or navigator, to establish not only how to approach a place but also what to do or see, and whether it will be of interest on arrival. Easy to browse, the book's illustrations have been selected to give a flavour of this water-loving country as well as to prepare the visiting yachtsman, whether under power or sail.

This book is posibly one of the most complete guides to a country's waterways ever produced. The details about the navigation and the places you visit are crisp, sharp and most informative and clearly illustrated with pictures or diagrams.

This books practical and clear layout enables you to plan in advance where to go and as a handbook then to be kept aboard a boat will enable easy reference from where to find good restaurants or shopping to assistance with bridge openings and lock times etc.

This must have taken a huge effort to research and write and one can only praise the author's dedication to such a huge task.
This book will open the delights of Holland's waterways to all who buy it.

I enjoyed the book thoroughly and would recommend it to anyone planning a boating holiday in the Netherlands as it is filled with useful information, well illustrated and an enjoyable read.

I bought the book as we have rented a Penichette (barge) to cruise some of the South Holland Canals in August and were keen on planning our route in advance.

However, you will need more information than is provided in the book in planning a tour. Some information is provided as to bridge heights and opening and closing times (lunch closing times are frequently provided but not morning or evening opening and closing times)and not all bridge heights are provided.

Since I realize this information changes from time to time it would possibly have been easier for the writers to refer the reader to the appropriate (well-hidden) Rijkswater website pages where the current information is available on the internet.

More maps of canals would also have been appreciated, and please note that Amsterdam city canal toll charges are no longer applicable. Nevertheless the book is well worth the spend and provided many hours of entertainment.

Very good 21 Feb 2012

I got this before our visit to the inland waterways last year. I'm really pleased with it - it's way better than the earlier guide we had.
It combines info about the waterways with more touristy stuff so it's well balanced. Strongly recommended
