RIVETING, READABLE, AND WELL-CRAFTED

“It hooked me right away and never flagged, It was sheer fun and adventure! I looked forward to reading several pages every night and never had to page backwards in order to pick up the thread of the plot. True, I don't usually read books in this genre but I did read "The Da Vinci Code". And I found "Initiation" to be as good if not better. I loved the names of the main characters: Driscoll, Van Bedros and Melkin and they were interesting, well-developed and easily distinguishable one from the other.” - LG

“Keith David Cooley is obviously a born story teller and this book is inspired from a deep place. The choice of words is continually pleasurable and the entire book is well-crafted - about the highest compliment I can give. Cooley is definitely a writer to watch and I look forward to reading more of his books.”

Bryan, a young man with a penchant for sensuality, stands shivering and naked in the baths of a seemingly obscure town in Asia Minor. His clothes have been stolen. It is 1977 and Bryan is traveling through the Middle East in the era just before the Islamic revolution in Iran and the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. Bryan meets a mysterious American of Armenian origin, Van Bedros, and together they pursue the thief. On a train he meets two tantalizing Frenchwomen and is drawn into a romantic entanglement with one of them. Soon Bryan is embroiled in an adventure full of danger, romance, suspense and intrigue while at the same time grappling with his own sensual impulses.

An English man named Bryan is traveling in the Middle East. He stops at a public steamhouse, and there he meets Van Bedros. Soon the two find their clothes swiped by a man named Driscoll. They travel together to search for Driscoll (or rather, Bryan tags along with Van Bedros, who seems to have some ulterior reason to find the mysterious Driscoll). Later these characters become embroiled in a murder. They chase after Driscoll, heading through various areas and meeting locals and travelers. They encounter dangers from police, become involved in a murder, and even unearth a secret organization. With all of this action going on, the story is confusing. I wasn't sure as to who any of the characters were or why I should really care about what was happening to them. They moved from location to location on a whim, their motivations were hard for me to pin down and I wasn't sure what the big deal with Driscoll was. Some things are cleared up towards the tail end of the novel, but the beginning feels like a jumble and didn't hook me.

The plot feels paper thin, but it is enough to get the characters moving, which is the important thing. Initiation Into the Secrets is an adventure, and I think Keith Cooley excels at showing the vast landscape of the Middle East. The customs, food, clothing and strife of the Middle East are eloquently captured and very detailed.I feel as though I've learned a fair bit about the history of the area and current events in that part of the world now.
A Thriller with Stunning Scenery 24 May 2012
By Martha Bryce - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
What I really loved about this book was the author's descriptions of the areas of the Middle East through which his protagonist traveled. Cooley's descriptions of areas of Turkey and Iran that are not on the roads well traveled are colored by his evident love of the area and his feel for isolated, austere beauty. His description of the Bam-i-yan valley, " the light pristine through a pellucid blue sky,,,starkly illuminated the limestone..." made me feel as if I were beside him at the end of his great adventure. His descriptions are not seen through rose colored glasses, for he also notes its "dust, permeability and degradation of reality" and later, the filth and debris of lives strewn all over, the disrespect for land and nature so evident everywhere."
Initiation into Secrets is an adventure story of a young British man, Bryan who turns his back on home, sets off to discover adventure and excitement, and finds himself embroiled in an adventure far above his ability to handle. From the moment Bryan meets Van Bedros, a CIA type American in the Turkish bath where their clothes are stolen by Driscoll (Van Bedros' arch enemy) to his first encounter on a train with Delphine, the luscious French woman who will become his lifeline, Bryan is in over his head. Murder, mayhem, heroin and a secret society are all in the path he must take to find out who he is and what he is really running from. It would have been nice to see some real character development instead of archetypes but this doesn't seriously detract from the book because it is Bryan's inner life with which we are concerned.
Cooley has combined an esoteric novel with an action and adventure novel, so it is sometimes a bit confusing when Bryan falls into a contemplative mode when he should be springing to action or to the local police station. All in all, though, the book works and leaves you with the lingering taste of dust in your mouth and what seem like actual memories of a land that you have only visited through the eyes of this writer.
Interesting book. 22 May 2012

Initiation into the Secrets takes place in 1977 in the Middle East. Englishman Bryan has left his family and homeland to travel through the different countries. He meets an American, Van Bedros, (who may be a friend or foe, Bryan is never sure which) in an Eastern Turkey bath house. They leave the country together and the story becomes a roller coaster ride from there. It quickly picks up with murder, drugs, cults, and acts of revenge. This is a story about a young man realizing that what he does impacts not only himself, but others also. The book is definitely a page turner.

The author describes the towns, people, and landscapes so vividly you feel that you are there. You can tell the author has been to the Middle Eastern countries he describes and he seems to respect and like the people. He made the people come alive and had me laughing and crying along with the characters. The book is very well written and edited, with the story flowing smoothly from beginning to end. I do wish he had developed the female character, Delphine, better. To me she seemed a little weak and lifeless, but not enough to take away from the story. I still enjoyed it.
