Wise Instruction Wrapped in Stories of Others Struggles 31 Jan 2011

"Inheritance Tug-of-War Stories" is a helpful book written for families to give them wisdom in preparing for their eventual deaths. The topic is highly relevant to all families in that we all have "stuff" and "issues" that we will leave after we die. If we do not prepare and make sure the family is on the same page, tragic results may occur after we are gone in which we have no idea how devastating they may be to those we leave behind. The thirteen stories included in the book each tell a different tale about families and their struggles with issues that happened after the death of a family member who didn't prepare effectively before-hand. The ramifications of remaining indifferent to the issues or determining to not make changes before death are spelled out in how those struggles inevitably tear families apart. Each story is told in a detailed, matter-of-fact way. Some stories made me chuckle; others brought a tear to my eye.

After the story is told, there is a section which includes: thoughts about this story- I found these bullet points to be helpful in understanding the story in full; they included possible solutions to the story, preventing a tug of war in your family-this section asks thought-provoking questions which make you think about how the problems and issues in the story may be affected by actions or conversations initiated by a member of the family who was offended or hurt, also how the issues could have been prevented by handling them appropriately by the family member before death, Peter's legacy-building tips- this final section after the story asks for the reader to start thinking about these issues even if they are very difficult; They are blunt, to the point, summaries of wisdom urging one to act or make decisions now before it's too late.
Learning through others' mistakes 8 Aug 2011

Inheritance Tug-of-War is a very applicable book to read for many people, not just people struggling with inheritance controversies within their family. This book is great for someone who is unfamiliar with the controversies of inheritance and how to properly approach the sticky subject within their own family. It was very helpful to me to understand some of the issues that can come up that no one thought about until after the passing of a loved one. Issues in this book have torn families apart and ruined relationships, but with the advice and avoidance techniques McClellan gives, it would definitely help ease the pain of those situations. Although the stories are about challenges, they are also very entertaining. I would consider this book a "Chicken Soup" for the Inheritance provider's Soul and a must-read for anyone that wants to plan for the future. Each chapter of the book contains a story about a specific challenge and after the story, McClellan provides a section called "Preventing a tug of war in your family" with solutions to the problems and also "Peter's legacy-building tips" so that you don't run into those problems in the future. Learning through others' mistakes makes the concepts easy to understand and even easier to prepare to avoid. Very interesting read!
