The first 2 albums didn't exactly get rave reviews but i liked them and thought they were underrated...however this album is very dull with no sparks whatsoever

2.0 out of 5 stars Not The Sum Of It's Parts, 5 Jun 2008
Free Kitten is the extra curricular musical outlet of one Kim Gordon (Sonic Youth), Julie Cafritz (Pussy Galore) and Yoshimi (Boredoms). This, their fourth album, is the first material that they've released in over ten years.... You know that old thing about monkeys in a room and Shakespeare? Well you would think that, given that the 3 elements of Free Kitten are certainly no monkeys and 10 years is a very long time, they could come up with something a bit more interesting than 'Inherit'.

The album brings to mind a rather long road journey; there's a couple of exciting moments when they are confronted by a serial killing hitchhiker ('Help Me'), party in a trucker bar ('Roughshod'), and have an incident with a monkey ('Bananas'), but on the whole it's a pretty long and uncomfortable affair with a never changing landscape.

There are moments of promise throughout 'Inherit'. 'The Poet' bludgeons the listener with a powerful 2-chord alternation but even when accompanied by some gruesome guitar noise, after two minutes it simply becomes tiresome. 'Monster Eye' builds on its initial ambience with some guitar effects that wouldn't sound out of place in a steel works, but ends with some truly awful GCSE style poetry, which renders the last 2 minutes unlistenable.

Despite the best efforts of Cafritz to infuse the album with some nuts - 'Bananas' (minus the absolutely shocking lyrics - please God say they are ironic), 'Seasick', 'Help Me' - on the whole it resembles the noodlings of a bunch of stoned 14 year olds in their parents garage. No more is this true than on 'Roughshod', which is simply immature in both sound and chord progression. 'Billboard' would be a great introduction to a ballsy song - all dissonant ambience and subtlety - but in its own right represents 2.5 minutes of your life that you'll never recoup and finally 'Sway' is a forgetful, meandering anti climax.

Kim Gordon's understated, buried vocals recall someone trying desperately not to drift off into the land of nod, which kind of sums up how this album makes one feel. Unfortunately, Free Kitten is not equal to, or greater than, the sum of its parts instead they sound like a group sleepwalking through their songs. For Sonic Youth fans it will tide them over until the next instalment. For everyone else this is not likely to win any more fans
