4.0 out of 5 stars An Unconventional WWII Soundtrack 6 Sep 2009
Format:Audio CD
The soundtrack album for Quentin Tarantino's 'Inglourious Basterds' is, like the film itself, something of an oddity. Eschewing a specially composed score in favour of archive material from composers such as Ennio Morricone, it's actually a very enjoyable listen - there are some brilliant pieces here, such as Morricone's 'Rabbia E Tarantella', utilised over the film's end credits, and 'The Verdict', with its homage to Beethoven's 'Fur Elise'. Pleasingly, David Bowie's stunning 'Cat People (Putting Out Fire)' is also included, used to great effect over one of the film's most memorable sequences, as well as some vintage German songs. As with any Tarantino soundtrack, it's a treasure trove of the catchy and the wonderfully obscure, and although a disappointingly short album, nearly every track is a winner.

Awesome soundtrack, just like all the Tarantino soundtracks. Goes with the film very well and has some good tracks to listen to, anyway.

By D.L.J.Mann TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Audio CD
For me one of the weaknesses of Inglorious Basterds was Tarantino's use of music from other fims, most of which I've seen or own the scores of. The mix of Spaghetti Western, blaxploitation and David Bowie might have seemed original on paper but in a WWII movie it did not play well in my ears. However, taken as a compilation of themes that a mate might put together with a decent soundtrack collection it's not half bad and might serve as an introduction to European film scores of the 60's and 70's.

Delights include excerpts from: Jacques Loussier's Morriconesque score for 'Dark Of The Sun' (1968) (recently re-released by FSM) which coincidentally starred Rod Taylor (Churchill in Inglorious Basterds) as the leader of a group of mercanaries in the Congo. Charles Bernstein's much admired funky score for the Burt Reynolds vehicle 'White Lightning'(1973) - as of yet unreleased on CD. Giani Ferrio's One Siver Dollar (1965) from the spagheti western of the same name (re-released by CAM). The 4 Morricone tracks: the beautiful Un Amico from the cop thriller Revolver (1977) (re-released by Dagored) starring Oliver Reed. Rabbia e Tarantella from Allonsanfan (1973) (re-released by GDM) set in the 19th Century and starred Marcello Mastroianni as an Italian aristocrat turned revolutionary. Dopo La Condanna (which interpolates Beethoven's Fur Elise)& La Resa are both from the Spaghetti western 'La Resa Dei Conti (1966)(re-released by GDM)and starred Lee Van Cleef. Lalo Schifrin's Tiger Tank from WWII comedy 'Kelly's Heroes (1970)(also re-released by FSM) and starred Clint Eastwood - Schifrin's score cheekily pastiched Morricone's Dollars score for one of the scenes. The Bowie track 'Putting Out The Fire' is from the score for 'Cat People'(1982)(released by MCA) and not the inferior version he recorded for the album 'Let's Dance.' Billy Preston's title vocal for blaxploitation movie 'Slaughter' (1972)(unreleased on CD) starring Jim Brown - is not to be confused with the sequel scored by James Brown.
