The album on which she officially gave up on Nashville and began singing torchy, adult-contemporary pop, Ingenue has been referred to by lang as her "stalker" album for its emphasis on songs about desire and obsession. Despite such onerous implications, the album is a charmer, thanks to lang's sincerity and passion and the smouldering arrangements of songs such as "Constant Craving", "The Mind of Love" and "Still Thrives This Love". The album's somewhat dark spirits are tempered by the camp "Miss Chatelaine", which lang has often performed live to the accompaniment of a Lawrence Welk-style bubble machine. Format:Audio CD
'Suicidal' has been used to describe this album, and there is certainly no reason to disagree. It piles on the problems, and even if you have never been on the wrong end of unrequited love you will certainly feel like you have by the end of it. It is little surprise that the making of 'Season of Hollow Soul' made both lang and Ben Mink ill!
This is the definitive lang album, and certainly the equivalent of jumping in at the deep end if it is your first. Tortured, dark and yet still with light at the end of the tunnel (cf. Constant Craving!), it is one of the best albums of all time, full stop.

I have to admit I have not heard all her albums, but I have heard most. Her previous albums were in the local library, so I listened to them. I can see why she changed direction and recorded this. I am a fan of some country music artists, but kd lang was not one of them.
So, what in heaven's name made me buy this? Perhaps it was "Constant Craving" which, if my memory serves me correctly, won a Grammy award (for best song?) or it might have been her voice. Whatever it was, I had to have the album - and what an album it is.
Her full, rich voice, the French-sounding torch accompaniment - accordion etc - and the exquisite songs just make this THE kd lang album to buy, and also one of the greatest albums I have ever heard.
The Amazon review, which mentions that it has been dubbed her "stalker" album rings true, as do the other reviews about the dark stories that these songs tell. Whatever they are all about is, she sings passionately, the musicians play wonderfully and it adds up to 40+ minutes of delight - I never tire of listening to this album.
So to the title of the review...why, oh why has she not produced another album which, in my opinion, which is anywhere near as good as this? I will never know! I bought some of her subsequent albums, but have not kept any! "All You Can Eat", "Invincible Summer" and "Drag" were light years away from the stellar standard of this album (I know other reviewers will be quick to disagree).
Never mind, the fact about this album is that it is absolutely from the top drawer - a massively paean of brilliance and an album which will never pale, because it is timeless.
If you haven't got this, you should not be ashamed, but you should go and buy it - you'll find it here at a very reasonable price and, whatever you pay, it will be money well spent.

Here k d lang turns into a stylish torch singer with a cool, subdued vocal style inspired by late 50's/early 60's singers like Patsy Cline, Connie Francis and Peggy Lee. Now and then she even veers into jazzy realm as on the elegant Ms Chatelaine. This set mainly consists of intelligent ballads like Save Me, The Mind Of Love and Wash Me Clean, but her consummate artistry is best displayed on the two stand-out tracks Still Thrives This Love with its compelling hook, and Season Of Hollow Soul which reminds me of the finer moments of the band Everything But The Girl. Ingenue is excellent in its genre but probably an acquired taste for most.

I knew I liked at least one song on this album, but after listening to the whole cd, I have to admit that Ms Lang has an amazing voice. Well worth buying this cd.

The best K.D. Lang record
Includes the best song of K.D. Lang "Constant craving", it was a number one single. But the whole record is quite good. Also K.D. has some really good record in her discography.
