I have to admit I have not heard all her albums, but I have heard most. Her previous albums were in the local library, so I listened to them. I can see why she changed direction and recorded this. I am a fan of some country music artists, but kd lang was not one of them.

So, what in heaven's name made me buy this? Perhaps it was "Constant Craving" which, if my memory serves me correctly, won a Grammy award (for best song?) or it might have been her voice. Whatever it was, I had to have the album - and what an album it is.

Her full, rich voice, the French-sounding torch accompaniment - accordion etc - and the exquisite songs just make this THE kd lang album to buy, and also one of the greatest albums I have ever heard.

The Amazon review, which mentions that it has been dubbed her "stalker" album rings true, as do the other reviews about the dark stories that these songs tell. Whatever they are all about is, she sings passionately, the musicians play wonderfully and it adds up to 40+ minutes of delight - I never tire of listening to this album.

So to the title of the review...why, oh why has she not produced another album which, in my opinion, which is anywhere near as good as this? I will never know! I bought some of her subsequent albums, but have not kept any! "All You Can Eat", "Invincible Summer" and "Drag" were light years away from the stellar standard of this album (I know other reviewers will be quick to disagree).

Never mind, the fact about this album is that it is absolutely from the top drawer - a massively paean of brilliance and an album which will never pale, because it is timeless.

If you haven't got this, you should not be ashamed, but you should go and buy it - you'll find it here at a very reasonable price and, whatever you pay, it will be money well spent.

UPDATE - 08 July 2013

It is as wonderful and as timeless as it ever was - and still the only k. d. lang album I have.

'Suicidal' has been used to describe this album, and there is certainly no reason to disagree. It piles on the problems, and even if you have never been on the wrong end of unrequited love you will certainly feel like you have by the end of it. It is little surprise that the making of 'Season of Hollow Soul' made both lang and Ben Mink ill!
This is the definitive lang album, and certainly the equivalent of jumping in at the deep end if it is your first. Tortured, dark and yet still with light at the end of the tunnel (cf. Constant Craving!), it is one of the best albums of all time, full stop.

Here k d lang turns into a stylish torch singer with a cool, subdued vocal style inspired by late 50's/early 60's singers like Patsy Cline, Connie Francis and Peggy Lee. Now and then she even veers into jazzy realm as on the elegant Ms Chatelaine. This set mainly consists of intelligent ballads like Save Me, The Mind Of Love and Wash Me Clean, but her consummate artistry is best displayed on the two stand-out tracks Still Thrives This Love with its compelling hook, and Season Of Hollow Soul which reminds me of the finer moments of the band Everything But The Girl. Ingenue is excellent in its genre but probably an acquired taste for most.

Let's face it folks, we've all been there....through the torment and torture of unrequited love. For k d lang the result was Ingenue, an exquisite collection of songs that cover every emotional twist and turn from a to z. Ingenue is simply a masterpiece. lang's voice is without doubt one of the finest of her generation and Ben Mink's and lang's musical prowess here is as limitless as lang's emotions.
Absolutely indispensable for the musical medical cabinet of life. Remedy for a broken heart? Listen to Ingenue twice daily 'til better. A sticking plaster for the soul. A musical triumph!

When this album was released in the March of 1992, I personally had never heard of K.D.Lang.
All this was about to change with the release of "Constant Craving" as a single from the album I was completely blown away when I heard the track, what a performance,I had never heard anything like it before.

On one hand the vocals reminded me of an old torch singer like Peggy Lee or Patsy Cline but on the other hand there was an element in her voice that gave me the feel of Elvis or Roy Oribson, this was enough of a reason for me to go and buy the album.

As the album opened with the track "Save me" I held my breath, this was heart stopping stuff, as I checked the sleeve notes I saw she had a voice to die for, she also co-wrote all the tracks, all with her producers Greg Penny and Ben Mink.

This track also contains some excellent lap steel guitar playing by Greg Leisz which added for me a haunting feeling of melancholy.
All the songs on this album are beautiful pain soaked songs, which for me are the best songs, I mean too say what's the point of making music with emotion and feelings.

Mr Mink not only co-produced this masterpiece but also did the string arrangements for the whole album;he also played guitar, bass, violin and viola across the 10 tracks that the album contains.

After doing some research on Ms Lang I found out that this album was a departure from usual style, which was a little more country in nature.

In recording this collection of songs K.D. has made an album that is totally revealing of herself and her life up to that point, a very intense but highly enjoyable album for anyone who loves and loves music...
