Product Description

Product Description

First published almost ten years ago, "Information Systems Development" is used by lecturers and students worldwide. Through long experience of teaching with the text and feedback from colleagues and students, the authors have continued to build from the solid foundations of the original text. The new 3rd edition of "Information Systems Development" has been updated and enhanced to reflect the latest developments in IS technology, and to meet the needs of a new generation in IS studies. The book contains comprehensive coverage of diverse topics including Oracle applications, UML notation, RUP, RAD and DSDM. There is a new section on SAP and other ERP systems. E-commerce and web applications such as Dreamweaver are examined, as well as additional information on package development and component based design. The authors further illustrate how these various technologies integrate with social and economic factors to provide a thorough examination of "Information Systems Development". Due to this broad content base, "Information Systems Development" is suitable for a wide range of degree programs without impacting the unique requirements of either computer science, or business and management courses. Both theoretical models and real-world examples provide an engaging and practical text, and there is considerable web-based support material available for both lecturers and students.

A superb book for undergraduates to show them all about methodologies, techniques and tools. I recommend this book to all undergrads studying this area. The only critisism is it needs to be supplemented with additional material on diagramming techniques (ERM's etc.) to make it a 5*. Its also a shame that it was not made bigger with the material from the 2nd edition that seems to have disappeared.

This book was required reading for my course, Ive just had the exam that was based on the most part on this book and its refreshing to be comming out of it thinking that you knew what you were talking about.

It was an invaluable aid to explain the otherwise tortuously explained field of Software methadologies, leaving no stone unturned but at the same time not giving overwhelming levels of detail.
However as a warning, it starts off easy and very quickly builds momentum. HOwever the way the book is structured allows you to use it as a reference, giving excellent examples and decent tutorials that make you think and use the information provided in a constructive way, perfect for actually learning something.
Superb are the first and last few chapters that talk about the issues that permiate the use of methadologies, setting their context and also providing a means to compare and contrast their attributes. The authors always maintain an impartial aspect and when they do voice their opinion you know its an intelligent evaluation of the subject.

Its only drawback is that if you really want to get into the meat of a particular topic then this book is a roadmap at best, it does that very well but for a greater level of detail you really want something more specific, probably from the expert in that particular methadology or field. Thats pretty much the only thing that stops me from giving this a 5 star rating. Otherwise as a course companion this is invaluable!

Methodologies, techniques and tools covers the multitude of accessories needed in any system developers toolbox. Whether studying or implementing an entire business system or just redesigning this is an essential read. It's strong point is the approach to methodologies. By taking a close analytical view of each (such as SSADM, UML, ETHICS, SSM, RAD, JSD and more)it is possible to identify the correct one for a given situation.Techniques gives much of the same view of things - a level unbiased opinion of documentation through entity modelling, normalisation, DFD's, Entity life cycle etc.And lastly, the tools section covers project and database management, system repositories, drawing tools and CASE tools. All-in-all well worth the cover price, and a useful addition to any IT bookcase. Ideal for consulting at a later date as a reference manual, though it has to be said that it is weak in the particular area of System Development Lifecycle(SDLC)and should be used in conjuction with perhaps Ian Sommervilles or Shari Lawrence Pfleeger's "Software Engineering" books.
