Product Description

Review

The security of personal information has never been of greater concern to the public. If the public s trust in those who hold their personal details is to be improved then information security cannot be left to chance. Implementing effective information security management principles is essential. The BCS provides valuable leadership in this area and this is a timely contribution to a vital process. --Richard Thomas, Information Commissioner.

The blurb on the cover indicates it is directed at business and IT managers but it is more likely to be of use to the worker who has to set up the system. To this end, encouragement and tips are given throughout on how to justify implementaton of the systems and controls to management. --IT Training Magazine

In looking for a technical book I look for authoritative writing; clarity of expression; knowledge; easy navigation and the sense that I am not having to work to find the information I need to get a job done. In this book I have found all of those things. Congratulations to the authors. --A senior Whitehall security specialist (anonymous for obvious reasons)

Product Description

How safe is your information? Recent events show that commercial, personal and sensitive information is very hard to keep secure, and some estimates point to 2007 as being the worst year on record for data loss. As breaches in information security continue to make headline news, it is becoming increasingly clear that technological solutions are not the only answer. Research conducted in 2007 suggests that at least 80% of data leakages are caused by staff rather than IT systems (source: Financial Times/Forrester Research, Nov-07). It is clear therefore that Information Security should be viewed as a management function rather than one of IT alone. Here, the authors outline the main management principles designed to help you secure your data, and raise awareness of the issues involved.

I've been working in Information Security for a Government organisation for over a year now and wanted a professional qualification to boost my career prospects and to ensure that my role was taken seriously. I chose the ISEB CISMP as they have a good reputation and the training seemed to offer exactly what I wanted. Because of my work experience I was able to apply for the Direct Entry examination and ordered this book to make sure I was ready. It is a fantastic book, well written, relevant and well worth the money. It takes you right from the begining of an organisation having no information security and takes it right through to designing your own information security architecture, documentation, risk assessments, and there's techy stuff such as encryption, VPN, SSL and other stuff. I passed my exam first time with this. The only negative comment I would make is that some of the exam questions were not covered in the book, and I would recommend doing some research into TCP/IP, and other network security stuff. An excellent book that I'd have no hesitation in recommending to any information security or IT manager.

Information assurance or security is a growing concern and this introductory book covers all the basic principles. Intended to support the ISEB examination of the same name, it provides a good grounding to anyone faced with the issues of proper information security and how to implement it. It supports the international information security standards and gives a good insight into some of the more complex areas.

It has been approved by the Information Commissioner as making a "... timely contribution ..." to the understanding of the issue.

This publication should be read by all IT managers and information security managers at all levels in an organisation as well as those more senior managers with corporate or departmental information security responsibilities.
