Product Description

CD Description

'Inflikted' marks the first studio reunion of the brothers Cavalera, founder members of legendary Brazilian metal act Sepultura, since frontman Max ignominiously quit the band in 1998. Neither party has been absent from the heavy music scene in the interim; Igor has continued to drum in Sepultura and Max brings his years fronting Soulfly to the table. Unsurprisingly, the album is a brutal, angry brew of contemporarymetal styles, although the liberal smattering of guitar solos tips a knowing hat to the old school.

3.0 out of 5 stars Metal by numbers for the Cavalera brothers., 5 April 2008
By A. Chapman "Thrash fan" (Sheffield, South Yorkshire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I had quite high expectations of the Cavalera brothers reunion, especially when I read that it was co-produced by Logan Mader, formerly of Machine head. I don't think this is a particularly memorable album. It just sounds like the same sort of thing that the brothers have done for many years now in their respective bands. No one track on this album has really slapped me in the face in a way that a lot of the older Sepultura material did. I never really rated Soulfly as a band and I think many people out there will just carry on listening to anything Max Cavalera does, simply because he's in it. Igor is one of the most innovative drummers of all time, but I think he did some more inventive stuff on the last few Sepultura albums. I know I'm going against the tide of popular opinion here, but I like the later Sepultura albums with Derrick Green more than the Cavalera conspiracy and Soulfly. Andreas Kisser has a very different guitar style and there's always some new ideas going on. I really hope they continue with the new drummer. 'Inflikted' by the Cavalera conspiracy is a highly competant metal record, but just nothing special from the brothers.

5.0 out of 5 stars A real blast.. from the past, 14 April 2008
I will freely admit that I approached this record with very high expectations, having been a huge fan of Max-era Sepultura back in the 90's. I honestly can't remember being so excited by a debut record from any band ever. Last time a metal record was this highly anticipated, it was Metallica's St Anger, and we all remember how crushingly let down we felt, even though we really, really wanted to love it...

So this record honestly felt like going back in time ten years, but in the best possible way! Let's all be honest, Seps without Max never sounded as Raw, and Soulfly just wasn't up to the standard of Arise, or Chaos AD.

Cavalera Conspiracy feels like a fantastic title for this new band, with the rumours of Max re-joining the old band, then Iggor quitting Sepultura amid speculation of a new project with his brother. Who knows what the truth is, and frankly who cares when the result is so vital?

Inflikted, as an album, sounds fantastic right from the off. Clearly the two brothers sound like they are having a fantastic time playing together again. Max's gutteral howls, crunching down-tuned guitars and Iggor's unmatchabe sense of rhythm just mesh perfectly and you're in no doubt that it was meant to be.

If we are being truly objective, it does all sound like a bit of a throwback. There's nothing radically new happening on this record. It sounds, in it's best moments, a hell of a lot like Chaos AD and some of Roots.

So why the 5-star review? Well, quite simply, if you were excited about the prospect of a Cavalera brothers reunion, then the chances are you were a fan of classic Sepultura and remember how terrible the split felt back in '98. It was more than a band with musical differences, it was a betrayal of family. So you'll have also hoped against hope that these two very talented musicians would eventually find a path to reconciliation. How can I attack the record for not sounding innovative? Well, the truth is that I did not want it to! The record sounds like Exactly like what you were clamouring for. No surprises, no bizarre diversions into "new birth", Spinal Tap style stuff. You get the feeling that Max & Iggor knew what we wanted, knew what they wanted, and they have delivered precisely that with no extra fat. For that, we should salute them.

OK, so it isn't, in name at least, the reunion of Sepultura that we really wanted, but it restarts the beating heart of that once-great band and resurrects it for the noughties with a new, fresh identity. Let the other ones have the old name and carry on with their decline. The Cavalera brothers will have the last laugh. I only hope now that it's not a one-off and I hope to be hearing a lot more from Cavalera Conspiracy in years to come. I was a fan before I heard a single note, and I'm very glad to say that this record has not let me down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ultra Mega!, 8 April 2008
By Ms. CR Dix "sugasphinx" (Wales) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
Well feck me sideways. Most people like to cling onto the past and hope for reunions of all the great bands. Sometimes they are mind-blowing and sometimes they are a tad disappointing. This band seem to have done the reunion thing that people were hoping for from the original Sepultura brothers, but with the twist of creating something new at the same time - something new that IS mind-blowing and not even close to being a disappointment. This album delivers some awe-inspiring metal from the collective genius that is Max and Igor. Miss it at your own peril!
