4.0 out of 5 stars One of the Great Games 13 April 2007
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
IF you are a student of the second world war and have a special interest in the fighting to push the German army out of North West Europe from 1944, this game is a must for you.

The level of detail is astonishing - you can fight as crack Waffen SS troops dug into the bocage or as green American infantry awaiting the German onslaught in the muddy Ardennes among many unit types. The fighting may range from a simple road block to a large scale tank battle.

The graphics may be basic compared to modern games but the AI and overall game play are fantastic. The action itself can be viewed from many angles and heights and the level of realism is superb- Your well placed German ambush may be wiped out in a minute by naval artillery or your flanking attack by Polish Armoured units may be met head on by Tiger tanks and panzerfausts. Veteren troops may modify your more misgiuded orders where as regular troops may push on in pointless frontal attacks.

The turn based idea of one minute sequences is a great idea and stops unrealistic micro management of fire fights as in other RTS games.

A real strategy feast.

5.0 out of 5 stars The first of the series 17 May 2006
Fun: 5.0 out of 5 stars
Battlefront's game comes with a host of deserved accolades. An exciting small scale WW2 game based on great research and accuracy provides an immersive experience. Playable on-line, by PBEM, LAN, and against the AI.

Simpler than its later bretheren it is a landmark game with its use of the WEGO system. Basically this means you give your men [tanks. artillery, infantry] their orders and then one minutes time is revealed in a film - and you cringe as you realise your orders have a revealed enemy troops ready and waiting.

Fortunately your little troops have their own sense of survival and will make revised plans for the remainder of the turn ... if still alive.

Viewable in eight different ways the film is rewindable and stoppable - allowing you to bask in your good moves and examine the ones where a tank has blown up for no obvious reason.

The next turn you can re-plot to take account of what has gone before.

A truly great game.
