I am recently getting back into comics after a few years hiatus. One of my first stops in terms of DC comics was the Infinite Crisis which was supposedly one of the largest events to happen to DC in the last few years.
In purchasing infinite crisis I also picked up this, the infinite crisis companion. I honestly did not know what to expect as all reviews here are for infinite crisis rather than this companion.
I have mixed opions about this, now having read it. I enjoyed it, I will say that and the art work was enjoyable to look at.
There is, as some may know, no main story line in this book, this book simply goes into a little more detail about what is happening elsewhere while the infinite crisis is going on and ties up a few loose ends from the four lead in books, omac project, villains united etc...
The problem is, none of this is very important, and very little happens that you needed to know, except maybe how the spectre's rampage was stopped, in fact the only interesting parts in this book (for me) were found in the follow up to "day of vengeance".
Overall all I think this book would be best borrowed from a mate or rented from the library, as it does not serve enough purpose to recommend buying it.

This book is a wierd one to classify. It contains four individual stories, each a 'special' to the four main Infinite Crisis preludes (OMAC Project, Day of Vengeance, Rann Thanagar War and Villains United). However, as the title suggests, each story is also important to Infinite Crisis itself; either setting up something that concludes within the main storyline or telling part of the main story which occurs 'off panel'. To be effectively appreciated this book has to be read somewhere between the fourth and final chapters of Infinite Crisis.
The easiest way to rate the importance of the book is to break down the individual components;
Day of Vengeance Special; The day of Vengeance story was fairly effectively concluded in the main series with a few loose ends to be tied up in Infinite Crisis. However, in Infinite Crisis there is very little actual action relating to the events of this series, just reference and a few random panels featuring the Spectre. The Day of Vengeance Special provides the events leading up to those panels.
Villains United Special; This story again concluded fairly effectively and the Special has little action featuring the lead characters. Instead it tells the story of other events featuring DC villains and explains how they suddenly all appear in Metropolis in the final issues of Infinite Crisis.
Rann Thanagar War Special; This series never really ended, it just finished with the unexpected revelation of an iminent threat. The story continues here making this essentially Rann Thanagar War issue #7. However, it also features few of the characters from that series and instead all of the characters that keep appearing in Space throughout Infinite Crisis.
OMAC Project Special; This is the least convoluted of the stories. It ties up loose ends from the events of Infinite Crisis which feature Brother Eye and the OMACs. These details are not important for enjoyment of Infinite Crisis. Likewise the story also serves as a nice addendum to the story of Sasha Bordeaux from the OMAC project story. Again not essential for enjoyment of the OMAC project story.
Realistically most of this material should have been within the pages of Infinite Crisis but it would have made that story too long. Instead it has been dumped here. This all makes it pretty hard (and pointless) to judge this book on its own merits. It is an important read for full enjoyment of Infinite Crisis but may be more confusing if you have not also read all of the prelude titles. As such I would only recommend buying if you have already bought the others. Importantly however, the quality is up there with the rest of the Infinite Crisis titles and this book will certainly enhance enjoyment of the whole crossover.

This companion book to the universe spanning `Infinite Crisis' storyline continues and concludes some of the plotlines that were started in the various `Countdown to Infinite Crisis' books. The four specials included are the `The Ninth Age of Magic', `Hands of Fate', `The Lazarus Protocol' and `A Hero Dies but One'; which are continuations of the books `Day of Vengeance', Rann-Thanagar War', `The OMAC Project' and `Villains United' respectively. As well as the continuations of each story the book also includes some of the events that were not shown in the actual `Infinite Crisis' book making this an essential read if you want to get the most out of the Crisis.
I did enjoy the Infinite Crisis event and this Companion book was also well worth reading. The chronology for each story fits in well with the events of the Crisis and each of the storylines is as well written and drawn as you would expect. `Day of Vengeance' was my favourite of the Countdown series and its continuation is also my favourite of the storylines included here but all the Specials in this book are fun, involving and a joy to read.
