Product Description

Product Description
Infectious Disease has established itself as a classic, practical, learning text providing information on the microbiological and clinical diagnosis, clinical management, epidemiology and control of infectious conditions as they occur both in the hospital and community setting. This new edition has been completely updated, with the antibiotics and AIDS sections extensively revised. New figures and clinical photographs have been added to better illustrate textual facts with case studies featured to illustrate learning points. Designed to be used either as a basic learning text, or as a practical textbook in the clinical setting. Infectious Disease will continue to appeal to students at all stages of their career, candidates for higher examinations, the general physician and surgeon, epidemiologists and experts in public health.

4.0 out of 5 stars A well laid out, helpful guide to infectious disease., 20 Sep 2000
By A Customer
The second edition of this book remains an ideal reference for use in the clinical area. The whole range of infectious conditions are included, and details of epidemiology, pathology, clinical presentation, diagnosis and management make it indispensable for anyone working in this relatively small field of medicine. The guidelines on management adopt a problem solving approach, and contain up to date information on aspects such as drug therapy. The text is accessible by both medical and nursing staff and, as such, is essential reading for anyone working with infectious disease in either a general or specialist setting.

2.0 out of 5 stars Useful for a trad clinical course. Unreliable scientifically, 30 Aug 2004
By W. James "brasenose" - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
course A: preclinical pathology and microbiology (150 students, 2nd yr)
Not suitable as a main text for this course. Clinical and systems-based approach potentially useful as supplementary reading for particular assignments. The molecular and cellular basis of the biology, pathology and control of infectious agents is too thin and out of date for our course. Peppered with errors at the most fundamental level (of influenza virus: " the RNA genome is segmented, with FOUR fragments"!).

course B: honours school Infection & Immunity (50 students 3rd yr)
Not suitable

course C: clinical microbiology & infectious disease (150 students 4th yr)
This book is well-illustrated with clear clinical photographs. The description of each disease is clear, concise and sufficiently informative for clinical students and PRHOs. The general organization of the book follows the common stems-based format at the chapter level. Within each chapter, however, the book reverts to a traditional, systematic organization, which suits classroom-based learning and revision but does not lend itself to a case-based approach. This is a good choice, as a reference work
