Book Description

10 July 2008

They dropped from the atmosphere like microscopic snow. Billions of seeds, smaller than specks of dust, spiralling down from the heavens. A few survived, and began to grow.

Now three people face a race against time. Dew Phillips, an agent with a classified unit of the CIA, and Margaret Montoya, a government biologist, must try to stop a modern plague that drives its victims to insanity, murder and suicide.

And Perry Dawsey, an ex-footballer in a dead-end job, must race to find a cure for the rash that has appeared on his arm. And his back. And his neck. And which is getting bigger.

And then the voices start.

Scott Sigler is the new voice in new horror - his UK debut is a terrifying, menacing thriller about millions of alien parasites infecting the general population, driving the victims to murder and suicide...and waiting to hatch...

Review

Gripping, pacy and often stomach-churningly violent...hard to put down (Independent)

'His work is gripping, pacy and often stomach-churningly violent. He tells stories that are, as the saying goes, hard to put down!' (Weekend Australian)

Sigler is masterful at grabbing the reader by the throat and refusing to let go...INFECTED is a marvel of gonzo, in-your-face, up-to-the-minute terror. (Lincoln Child, author of Deep Storm)

Part Stephen King, part Chuck Palahniuk...a pulpy masterpiece of action, terror, and suspense. Three recommendations: don't read it at night, or just after you've eaten a full meal, or if you're weak of heart. You've been warned! (James Rollins, author of The Judas Strain)

Sigler is the Richard Matheson of the 21st Century...smart and creepy, INFECTED is a flawless thinking-persons thriller. Bravo to a bold new talent! (Jonathan Maberry, Bram Stoker Award-winning author of Bad Moon Rising)

'Even hardened genre fans will find themselves whimpering at each new revelation. This terrifying page-turner could be the author's breakout book.' (Publisher's Weekly - Starred review)

From where I stand, Sigler is at the top of the tree (Jason Bradbury, BBC, on EarthCore)

This novel's got it all: cutting-edge science; a perfectly-realized setting; terror both plausible and profoundly unsettling. EarthCore is more exciting than a thriller has any right to be! (Lincoln Child on EarthCore)

Bad things happen to bad people in this book. Then they happen some more. Very. Bad. Things. Things that make you wonder just what sort of childhood the author must have lived through. No way I'm going caving with him anytime soon. Or letting him near knives in my presence. (Evo Terra, host of XM Satellite and FM syndicated radio show 'The Dragon Page' on EarthCore)

EarthCore is in-your-face, steel-tipped boot on your throat, speed-metal fiction. Nail-biting suspense and non-stop action breathe life into his debut novel (Tee Morris, co-author of Podcasting for Dummies)

The Hot Zone meets "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" as an unidentified "virus" sweeps America. It is as graphically horrid as Palahniuk and as compulsive as Stephen King (Bookseller)

Why then choose INFECTED over the latest cinematic thrillers? Because it packs more thrills and ingenious ideas into its 339 pages than Hollywood has managed in 100 years...imagine a genetic splice of The Last Boy Scout, Body Snatchers and Richard Matheson's Shrinking Man, and you're on the way to understanding the slack-jawed fun of INFECTED (SFX)

Gripping, pacy and often stomach-churningly violent...Sigler seems to have star potential (Guy Adams in The Independent)

Fast-paced and engaging...a compelling read and an exciting story well-told (Black Static)

4.0 out of 5 stars A fun horror romp 31 July 2008
Format:Paperback
Great to see the Scott Sigler making the crossover from his "new media" podcasting roots into the traditional publishing arena.

An updated version of a story originally told as a serialised audio drama, Infected is a real page-turner. The plight of the central character, Perry, is not for the faint-hearted, but while you might feel squeamish about learning what happens next you also feel compelled to read on and discover how it all pans out. A difficult balance to strike in a novel, but one that has been expertly handled by the author.

Scott Sigler is definitely one to watch and I'm glad to learn that a sequel is already in progress.

5.0 out of 5 stars Horribly Good! 21 July 2008
Format:Paperback
This is a must-read, particularly for fans of the sci-fi and horror genres. A gripping story, combined with well-realised characters, I was hooked from beginning to end.

A word of warning though - this book is most certainly not for the faint-hearted or weak-stomached. If you can handle the gore Sigler dishes out, you're in for a great ride! Be sure to check out Sigler's other works, particularly his podcast novels - all superb and highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars a must read 4 July 2010
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
ok. I have been purchasing books off Amazon for years, but am very rarely moved by a book to submit a review. This book is one of those occassions.
This title is the first I have read by Scott Sigler and while not a 'horror' fan, I found this book almost unputdownable (if there is such a word!). Itis an excellent read, which keeps you on tenderhooks all the way through. I hope a sequel is planned ...

5.0 out of 5 stars This is the BEST book! 6 Dec 2009
Format:Paperback
the one thing I admire about an author, besides a great knack for storytelling, is the fearless ability to kill off characters. there's none of this namby-pamby nonsense about ALWAYS having your characters saved at the very last minute- if they die, they die...and SO horribly.

It's mind blowing, exciting, gross, scary and you CAN'T put it down...trust me...

but i won't give away the gold...go, read...now. Or, ya know, if you can't be bothered to read it yourself go listen to it on podcast.

Earthcore, infected and it's sequel: contagious are the best.

Every once in a while I go to the bookstore and treat myself to a browse through the "Thrillers" section. A couple of months ago I noticed this book with a black cover and a mesmerizing green eye with a triangle iris..hmm..sounds good, a bit science fictionesk as well..let's buy it..

Started to read on a rainy Saturday afternoon. Chapter 1, and I fell for it hook, line and sinker. This book is a combination of "urgh" moments when Perry takes on the Triangles in his own unique way (I'll never look at a tweezer in the same way again), and helpless chuckles once the Triangles start to make their presence known to him (is it wrong to find them extremely funny in their reactions ?) Good twist and turns as well, although the last chapter (the "grand finale") felt a little bit thrown together.

Best book of the year I think. The sequel has already been ordered, and I can't wait to dig in Scott Sigler's weird 'n wonderful world again !

By Kentspur VINE VOICE
Format:Paperback
'Infected' by Scott Sigler is a highly readable, nausea inducing (in a good way), take on the 'body horror' genre best illustrated in the films of David Cronenbourg like The Fly. It is only let down - partially - by an apparently rushed ending which fails to convince.

Good things first - the premise is strong; the 'science' is well-realised and the pace is relentless. The central character - ex-football player; resourceful, tough, champion of the human race - Perry Dawsey is a wonderful creation. His battle with the lurgies infecting him is utterly compelling. The way Sigler uses the spectre of his abusive father to drive Perry on is particularly effective.

Less good are the CIA/CDC team chasing after the infection. The lead CIA agent is just a walking cliche - burnt-out Vietnam vet - and the micro-biologist - foxy, Latina, ambitious woman - under-drawn. The main problem with this disparity is that Sigler starts with the less interesting people, though the real heart of the novel is Perry. I'm not even sure he could not have excised the chase team ands just left it as a sweaty, bloody, gore-filled struggle between man and parasite; Perry versus the triangles.

As i said, the end doesn't really scan and the debt to Stephen King's 'The Tommyknockers' (not the greatest King work) is very evident, however I was entranced by this book and read it very quickly indeed. Images from it still live in my imagination and, i think, you can have no higher praise for a book of this kind.
