Book Description

A dramatic tale of adventure, love and fate against the backdrop of one of the most decisive battles in history.

Product Description

In 1815, beneath the aegis of the Army of Occupation, Brussels is the gayest town in Europe. And the widow Lady Barbara Childe, renowned for being as outrageous as she is beautiful, is at the centre of all that is fashionable and light-hearted. When she meets Charles Audley, dashing aide-de-camp to the great Duke of Wellington himself, her joie de vivre knows no bounds -- until the eve of the fateful Battle of Waterloo ... (20030623)

"An Infamous Army" is an excellent Heyer romance which takes place during the tense times before Waterloo, which battle is the climax of the book. Heyer's accounts of Wellington's handling of the war and of the battle itself are absolutely gripping reading---intricately detailed and painstakingly researched. "An Infamous Army" is a historical romance on an entirely different scale from most of Heyer's other novels; even those who ordinarily avoid romance should definitely read this one.

Of course, there is romance: between the Lady Barbara Childe, a member of the Alastair family from "These Old Shades" and "Devil's Cub", and Charles Audley, from "Regency Buck". It's not a sequel to those books, but several characters reappear, particularly Judith from "Regency Buck", who is here one of the major points-of-view.

Heyer's magnum opus, and a great read.

Maybe, like me, the prospect of reading long descriptions of battle scenes were not what you had in mind when picking up a Heyer novel. Well don't be put off. This is Georgette Heyer at her very best. Her characters are as well-written and attractive as ever. Charles Audley is charming, and you do wonder, along with his family, whether he has taken leave of his senses in deciding that Lady Barbara is the woman for him. She is easily the worst-behaved, most far from perfect of Heyer's heroines. Fortunately she knows it, and during the course of the story, the reader comes to see that she is honest and brave despite her many faults. The rising tension as the battle approaches is very well conveyed. So that by the time that it starts, your interest in Charles's fate, as well as that of several other endearing characters, would have carried you through, whatever the quality of the description. However, I found the battle scenes the most gripping part of the story. She manages to convey very accurately (so I am told), ever detail of the day, in such a way that I didn't want to put the book down until the end. The terrible loss of life at Waterloo is made so much more heart-breaking by your interest in the characters that you have come to like by this stage. Absolutely brilliant.

Historical Romance 15 Nov 2007
By Mrs. K. A. Wheatley TOP 500 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Format:Paperback
This is atypical of Heyer's work in that it focuses predominantly on the history, rather than the romance. Having said that, it is unmistakeably Heyer. Feisty heroine, dashing hero and some fine humour to sustain it. It is history heavy however, and if you're not keen on the minutiae of military history I suggest you steer clear, and if you're looking for an introduction to Heyer I suggest you start elsewhere and come back to this when you're truly hooked. Apparently the historical detail in this book is accurate to such a degree that her work is used to teach students about Waterloo. Never having studied it, I can't comment for the veracity. It is however, an interesting book, although not one of my favourites.

For the attention of film and TV producers
This novel, with it's much praised account of Waterloo, deserves to be made into a film or TV drama to coincide with the 200th anniversary of the battle in 2015.

Another great Heyer, but...
Again another brilliant Heyer book, my only criticism is that, unlike most of her other novels, this one is rather heavy going. Read more
