This is another Taschen guide on 20th century design, however this one is probably the most general one, as it does not focus on a specific product / product class, or a specific designer or era but aims to give an overview of the late 19th to the first years of the 21st century generally. It will range from soaps, to cars, to planes, clothing, furniture, in fact pretty much any class of consumer product is likely to feature somewhere inside.
It is divided into two main parts (after the customary 2 page broad brush stroke introduction) - the first one focusing on various designers and companies, and the second one on the trends, materials and techniques.
As said, the first of those parts is neither designer, nor product centric but is an eclectic mix of Manufacturer, Designer and Product entries. They range from one to 5 pages per entry and include at least one picture and a brief description. These will of course not provide you with an in-depth knowledge of the designer / company in question but they will at least give you a short overview - more of a cocktail party conversation piece knowledge than an expert debate foundation.
The second part will deal with things such as new materials (aluminium, carbon fibre, etc.), product trends (streamlining, aerodynamics...) and general trends (branding, essentialism...). Again a short 1-5 pages piece is written on each and you will get a similar depth as in the first part.
As the book is quite hefty (even by Taschen standards), it omits the usual tri-lingual presentation and is in one language only - this for instance is only in German. Therefore beware what you are buying, if you are not fluent in all the usual Taschen languages.
