Their first, and best, album,
This review is from: Industrial (Audio CD)
There's a raw intensity (barely) harnessed on this CD that kicks in with Landfill and smoulders out as the last track fades away. Back in the day, Pitchshifter really knew how to grind out a massive tune, so it's safe to say that this isn't going to appeal to all the kids that like their stuff now. This CD is a wall of sound, it's "of its time" and captures the spirit of the underground grindcore scene perfectly, the same way Streetcleaner by Godflesh does (and if anyone tries to say Pitchshifter didn't want to be Godflesh then they need to listen to this album). The drum machine beats are set on "kill" and each track is absolutely huge, almost anthemic in it's power. People who think that Fear Factory or Machine Head are industrial need to get their ears around this album - it'll blow you right out of your shoes. This is where industrial met metal and for a few months Pitchshifter were a really awesome band. I listen to this and wonder about "what might have been" if Pitchshifter hadn't sold out for the bucks (or become something more tuneful, depending on your viewpoint). Definitely one of the defining albums of my youth.

Not their best, not their worst,
This review is from: Industrial (Audio CD)
I sort of knew what to expect when i bought this album some years back. I had heard of Pitchshifter's background in the grindcore scene, but to be honest, i hadn't heard much grindcore music. It took me a while to like this album, but it was worth the effort. "Landfill" has to be one of my favourite pitchshifter tracks, and the other high points on this album "Gravid Rage", and "Skin Grip" are very good indeed. But the album as a whole does grate a bit - even the sample filled "New Flesh" (which the band have re recorded twice) can't stop it being a bit one dimensional, a bit flat. Buy Submit first. It's cheap (and better), and if you like it you will probably like Industrial. One thing's for sure - Industrial beats Deviant.

The best album they ever made, this is crushing stuff-at the time described as "Death Industrial" which sums it up, on this album the style is best described as Godflesh with Bolt Throwers vocals.
They (and Godflesh) are not Grindcore as several others have said but are at a similar level of extremity, this is slow, mechanical pounding stuff with a solid rythm section that is ideal to work-out to. This along with Street Cleaner by Godflesh is tied for me as the best super heavy industrial recording i have heard. After this release the band ventured into a more Techno influenced sound which remained heavy but got weaker with each release.
