Product Description

Product Description

Appropriate for one semester/two-quarter undergraduate level courses in Industrial Ecology.

Industrial ecology is a new way of looking at economic and environmental interactions. This is the first textbook available to those interested in learning how to put into practice the idea of performing industrial activities while keeping environmental consequences in check.

From the Back Cover

To a significant degree, the first edition of this book defined the new field of industrial ecology, the restructuring of technological activity to incorporate environmental concerns. Important topics from that book are updated here, among them

  • life-cycle assessment
  • product design for the environment
  • the incorporation of environmental considerations into product development
  • integrating industrial ecology into corporations
  • budgets and cycles

In addition, the new edition includes entire chapters on topics that are becoming or have become newly important to the field:

  • the biological model applied to industrial systems
  • the status of resources
  • the transition from products to services
  • systems analysis
  • Earth systems engineering and management

While still serving as a practical guide to product designers and corporate managers, the new edition also provides guidance for the broader task of mapping a societal evolution to a more sustainable world, thus justifying industrial ecology's label as "the science and technology of sustainability."

A very useful and thought provoking book. This is a must for anyone thinking about, working in, and teaching waste and resource management. Industrial Ecology (IE) is a concept that looks to the recycling of substances through the ecosystem as a model for the structuring of manufacturing and waste minimisation problems. The section on Life Cycle Analysis will be of use to a growing number of people concerned with new EU legislation. The structure of the book, and development of problem solving strategies is logical and easy to follow. The maths used in book is easily understandable, although requires careful thinking about in places. The exercises are useful for this, however less knowledgable readers would appreciate an answers section at the back. The Appendices are packed with useful data, both for the exercises and developing your own problems. It has prompted me to start to use the concepts and theories in my own classes.

Practical models for Corporate Environmental Strategies 20 Nov 2006
By Daniel Waisberg - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
I bought this book while writing my under-graduation final project in "Corporate Environmental Strategies", which was later published in a Brazilian magazine called Industrial Ecology. The book changed the way I see environmentalism in a very important way: it made me stop discussing about the real state of the world and start worrying about improving it (in those times I had read 'The skeptical Environmentalist' by Bjorn Lomborg and 'The Ultimate Resource 2' by Julian Simon, which are great books in my opinion). I started to understand that the most important is not to define where we stand, but to make the world a better place.

Graedel and Allenby propose practical and detailed strategies in order to 'green' the production process. They start the book with a really unbiased discussion about environmentalism and slowly provide the context for the introduction of environmental processes into the industrial world (full table of contents below). The text is written in a very clear and didactic way, and the technical terms are explained from A-Z.

I strongly recommend this book for engineers, environmentalists, managers, biologists, and people who want to improve the world's environment.

Great reference for students in a wide variety of majors. 29 Jun 2000
By Mariana Ruiz - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
The book presents the main topics of environmental science in a clear, organized format, relating them to industrial production of goods. Full of visual aids, excercises, and suggested reading lists at the end of each chapter, could definetly be a text book for undergrads.

Humanity and Environment.Technology and Industry. Lyfe-Cycle Assessment. Process and Product Audits. Industrial Design. Materials, Packaging and Transportation. Recycling.

Though a bit dated the information is well put together.
