A Book to Avoid 19 April 2004
Format:Paperback
While at first look this book may seem very well-written and detailed, describing many remote regions of Indonesia that other guidebooks ignore, much of the description of such remote places is obviously based on hearsay.
When visiting many of those remoter islands/regions during my 4 years around Indonesia, I very often found that the exciting attractions (like traditional architecture or traditional cultures) described by this book simply did not exist!

While the background information on better-known parts of the country is more accurate and worth reading, the fact that many parts of this book don't seem to have been updated for decades further reduces its value.
So I'd say that for background information the regional guides by Periplus are better, while for practical travel details get the Lonely Planet or Rough Guide.

I have bought this book in Australia. I personally think that it is a must for any person who is planning to travel to Indonesia. It is well written. It has useful information about important aspects which the traveller would want to know. There are different sections about the different regions in Indonesia. Now once you have read this book, I think your next step would be to study Indonesian.

I used the 1st edition of this book in 1977, when it was called 'Indonesia, A Traveller's Notes,' and since then Bill has developed Indonesia Handbook into something of a classic. When you have this volume in your hands you'll know immediately that Bill Dalton is the authority to whom all subsequent travel writers on the archipelago are indebted. I concede that he helped lay the basis for my own South Pacific Handbook, now in its 7th edition. Both travellers and serious researchers will find Indonesia Handbook an invaluable reference tool.
