Product Description

Product Description
Can secular indoctrination occur and is it happening within the education system? European history has made westerners very wary about the dangers of religious indoctrination, but we are less ready to receive and examine evidence for indoctrination by secular worldviews. This wide-ranging book looks at what indoctrination really is and how it operates, particularly through the media and education. It asks if the apparent western unease about religion relates to uncertainty about national identity. The book examines the values that the vast enterprise of education is assuming or affirming in the UK and how far this goes to shaping minds. If a society's education is in some ways a mirror of its value, to what extent do we see in the mirror of education a reflection of our early 21st century society?

5.0 out of 5 stars Rethink your perspective on education, 24 Jun 2005
By Andrew Millar (Aylesbury) - See all my reviews
This is not just a book for RE teachers; I am not one! It's a book for anyone interested in considering the values and systems of belief which education implicitly conveys, and therefore a must for all teachers who wish to reflect on their classroom practice. Copley, a well known author amongst RE teachers, is a Professor of Education at the University of Exeter.

Copley begins with an analysis of British culture, noting for over a hundred years a creeping secularization both in society and in education in particular. Yet at the same time he observes an undiminished or even growing interest in spirituality amongst many people.

Education in general and religious education in particular has, he argues, become secularized. Copley offers and alternative which will certainly provoke if not meet wholesale approval - and certainly not from much of the secular establishment!

This book will challenge. It goes against the grain of so much thinking - which is why it is essential reading.

5.0 out of 5 stars Dawkins Eat your heart out!, 18 Aug 2007
By David Bone (Coventry UK) - See all my reviews

It was so refreshing to read a balanced scholarly work on this topic. Copeley makes the ranting of Dawkins look positively childish and shows that it is possible to balance rationality and faith in the modern world without compromising either. A first class effort. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars fantastic reading, 18 Nov 2008
This book raises the question of if we were being indoctrinated now, would we know? He looks into secular indoctrination and how it is influenced by education and the media and what essentially it has done to God. The book makes very easy reading, and at times made me laugh out loud (something quite rare for an academic text to do). I would recommend this book to anyone in Religious Education or from a personal viewpoint. Having read this straight after 'The God Delusion' I found it refreshing as it makes its arguement without attacking other stances.
Excellent book.
