Entertaining, Inspirational, and Thought-Provoking 13 July 2011

In Individual William Luckey presents two memorable heroes. As the stories unfold, Luckey's meticulous character development and vivid word pictures help us to "know" each character and vividly "see" the scenes. Through his characters, Luckey reveals an apparent keen understanding of human and horse nature.

In Del Winter (A Debt Owed), who risks his life and the land he loves to defend a group of wild mares, we see a man who has chosen an authentic life of integrity when his early life might have led him in a negative direction. Del has the toughness and courage to live life on his own terms and the sensitivity to be a "horse whisperer" and to have a mutually supportive relationship with a new love. Those who oppose Del's efforts on behalf of the horses include Del's brother, Alan. In contrast to Del's path, Alan has lived an unexamined life filled with misplaced blame, anger, and revenge. Del's unique; intelligent; horse-with-attitude, Rocky, provides insight into the complex nature of horses.

Harlan Ora Judkins (The Sum of Much) seeks to overcome the stigma of his family name and establish his separate identity. Though his speech shows a lack of verbal fluency, his relationships and the level of understanding he expresses in his college English class reveal intelligence, sensitivity, and depth. These qualities are movingly displayed as Harlan courageously stands before his community and city officials to eloquently defend a treasured piece of swamp land and its inhabitants from the destructiveness of development as a public park.

Individual is entertaining, inspirational, and thought-provoking. I will add Del and Harlan to my list of symbols to summon when I need to take a stand.
Two rough winners 19 Jun 2011

A book with two stories that can hit harshly to read of rough lives with deep standards. The first story, A DEBT OWED, set in New Mexico, is brutal in its detail of the mythology of wild horses - their fantasy existence being enclosed and destroyed by the `kindness' of unknowing human compassion. The individual who tries to dismiss misplaced intentions and save a few of the trapped and starving mustangs is himself brutalized by human interference. The story is swift in its malicious actions and delicate in the intense connection of two insulated people quick to recognize in each other a rarity of strength and will. Moments of humor and passion ease the story, which needs to be consumed and inspected, to touch in each reader their remnants of commitment and stubborn humanity.
THE SUM OF MUCH carries this same theme, to a less brutal physical degree, as it explores one man's solitary struggle to accept his individual responsibility for a small and forgotten place, and the inhabitants who instinctively honor the importance of this area lost outside the common and ordinary sphere of modern activity. Despite his own desire to move away from casual life, the individual digs into the remains of his shattered courage, and speaks for those who can no longer bear witness against greed and destruction.
Two stories, in one book, are reminders of the possibilities within each individual. And again, the stories are made real by the writer's detailed visual settings that hold you in place.
