Book Description

Colin Cooper's 'Individual Differences' has been a favourite among lecturers and students of differential psychology since it was published in 1997. It is unique in its comprehensive coverage of both personality theories and the methodological issues associated with personality and psychometric testing.

This new edition has been fully revised and expanded to include recent developments in the field. There is also a new chapter on Emotional Intelligence and expanded coverage of the Big 5 model of personality and positive psychology. Cooper also discusses influential new fields such as cognitive epidemiology and a new chapter on practical applications demonstrates how what has been learned can be applied to everyday life from recruitment to predicting whether psychopaths will reoffend.

The accompanying website provides comprehensive support for both students and lecturers, including MCQs, sample exam questions, PowerPoint presentations, revision flashcards, interactive glossary, and revision summaries.

An informative and enjoyable trip through personality and psychometrics, this book is essential reading for all students wishing to gain a broad understanding of this fascinating field.

More About the Author

I lecture and research in the psychology of human intelligence and personality at Queen's University, Belfast. I started writing when I realised that there were not any textbooks covering the sorts of areas that I wanted to teach, and discovered that I rather enjoyed it. It is also excellent for clarifying my own ideas: when you commit yourself to something on paper and give a critical analysis of it, you often think of something new with research potential... a second edition of the Intelligence book is on the way, and a psychometrics book (combining both theory and best-practice) is gestating.

A few years ago I put together the IQ tests for the BBC and RTE "Test the Nation" IQ tests which was great fun; I also went to Japan a couple of times to appear on their programmes. So if my face seems vaguely familiar, that could be why.

I currently live in South Belfast with Wesley and Pip (partner and cat) though we plan to emigrate to Ontario within the next few years.

'Colin Cooper's updated textbook is a joy to read. It cuts through the thicket of detail to explain important concepts in an easy-going style that students will appreciate...I shall be using this book in my undergraduate individual differences lectures and encourage other lecturers to do likewise.'

Professor Philip J. Corr, University of East Anglia

'This is the best available comprehensive introduction to differential psychology. It covers the topics, techniques and many of the tests in an accessible, authoritative and agreeable way."

Professor Ian J. Deary, University of Edinburgh

5.0 out of 5 stars Individual Differences 11 Nov 2010
By Zoe
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Bought to supplement my Individual Differences module on my psychology degree and it certainly helped me pass. I imagine it would be a useful book to refer to in general, since individual differences can be applied to other psychology modules.

However, its thinness suggests it is more of an introductory text.
