Isabelle - More than just a Pot Boiler?, 27 Mar 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: The Indignities of Isabelle (Nexus) (Mass Market Paperback)
I recently read "The Indignities of Isabelle", by being sold just on its cover - thinking that it may just be another book of erotica. However, I was very pleasantly surprised.
This is the first book I have read of Penny Birch's, having interest in her subject matters of spanking, humiliation, bondage and some mild corporal punishment.
Penny's style is very refreshing, I guess it comes from her ability to write well - Penny's command of the written language is excellent, which makes this Erotic thriller even more steamier as she can convey to the reader activites that leave you to imagine your part of it.
Her detailed descriptions on the use of Victorian Costumes- corsets, stockings, canes, and dresses are superb! Her ability to set the scene - in itself an intense form of foreplay is nothing less than brilliant.
I revelled in the masterstroke of her subjects being humiliated - spanked, watched by others, enjoyed by many, taken by both sexes and always left brinking on the edge - which made the pathos so much more intense.
This is an erotic masterpiece I could liken it to a modern day Anais Nin. Its strength is its intensity, well developed characters and settings, continuity and most of all its style.
Simply brilliant - well done Penny! I look forward to reading some of your other novels
