Although Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom is a fantastic score, the soundtrack is not. Not only is it poorly packaged with cheap black and white stills but the disc barely contains a QUARTER of the film's music. It unforgivably misses out Club Obi-Wan, the flight to India, the Indian Village, stealing the Shankara stones, evil Indy, the escape from the mines and the entire climactic bridge sequence. First-rate music should not be treated in this fashion. This is the only official release of Temple of Doom ever and if you are really desperate then maybe you are considering a purchase (copies tend to be pricey) otherwise, wait for an expanded release. Believe me, this release won't satisfy.

As film soundtracks go, less is usually better, so criticising this album for its short length seems out of place. True, it clocks in just above 40 minutes but what a grand 40 minutes it is. There's not a single track you would wish to skip. In fact, the music is so good that it's difficult to choose highlights at first. But there are highlights of course and the first of them would be `Nocturnal Activities', which starts off with beautiful love theme and then carries on through a humorous part where music is describing the passing of time and ends up with frantic action music. Then there's the creepy thuggee choral chant in `The Temple of Doom'. It came as a surprise to me, because when I first saw the film I thought it was something they came up with on the set, more of a sound effect than music. I never suspected it was composed by Williams but here it is and listened on its own, without the picture, it makes a striking impression. Apart from that there's the humorous but also epic at times `Short Round's Theme' and probably the best known `Slave Children's Crusade' - a great action cue which builds up slowly with brass and percussion and then changes dynamically all along the way. Last of my favourites is `The Mine Car Chase' where music perfectly imitates the sound of a mine car running through underground tunnels.
This album shows Williams at his best. The music flows effortlessly from start to end and after you finish listening you just can't wait to play it again. It's a must buy for any Williams fan. I put this album in my top five just after `E.T.', `Jaws', `Hook' and before `Jurassic Park'. Highly recommended at any price. Just watch out for bootleg editions with extra tracks - unlike the original, the sound quality on these is said to be really poor.
