First off, Huge Indy fan. I will surely spoil. Go.
Following from the first three I appreciate the ties to them, the opening in Area 51, Karen Allen's return, Indy's son having a phobia of his own, Ford as always being awesome, but...
It really just doesn't come to a great experience. As every Jones adventure should.
The action feels forced: falling down three water falls, in a row, and needlessly counting each one like I'm stupid. Having a flip-flopping dislikeable, companion/enemy in Ray Winstone. Not having Sallah! Sallah is needed. Can no-one see that he was in the two better films? Shia swinging in the trees with monkeys... why? Unnecessary use of CG. Attempting to compare LaBeouf with Brando. WHAT?! And mainly, everyone felt old. I don't mean age wise, I mean mentally. Spielberg wasn't making it as sharp and quick as the others were. Lucas, as we all know has completely refocused his attentions as to the content of his pictures; schmaltzy and sickeningly expositional. Kahn's editing was, again with many of Spielberg's recent work, slow and left the film about 20 mins too long. But so many scenes I was sitting there with the answer in my head for so long that I was close to screaming it at the screen 10 mins before they finally said it.
Ford, as I said was great and as always, just like with the Star Wars saga the only other man who can always be counted on is Mr. John Williams. The score is truly timeless, engaging and delightful when it was called for. If they do force me to buy this film as part of the Indiana Jones Blu-ray box-set, they better do what was done with Inception wherein the second disc has a solo score track.
I just ranted I know, but I really did just hold back a mountain of disappointment there. I hope that if they do make another, they learn from the mistakes they had with this.
Also, if they dare to do what they hinted at in the end of this... No. Just. No.
