This review is from: Indian Origins of Basque, European, Hispanic and Russian People - More from Mahadeva (Paperback)
This is a lovely book with lots of research on the similarities between Basque and Indian languages. Its a list of words with very little narrative, which is excellent as a reference book.
I do however dispute the Indian Origins theory, not because I dont think the similarities stand up to scrutiny, but more because there are no time-lines to base the assumptions. Basically, you make an assumption and then try and prove through known history whether your theory is borne out with the word etymology. I found that missing in this book. So while the list is useful on its own, it can as easily be used to conclude that the Indian languages have originated from the Basque ones. The debate about the migration of Indo-European people is still up for grab, did these people start in Europe and migrate to India or vice versa, who knows? A lot of scholars have tried to use words and their etymology to make the connections, but none of it is provable. So if I can ignore the fact that the assumption made in the book about the origins of the words being either Indian or Basque, its a fantastic piece of original research and a good book for the reference rack.
