Book Description

Oct 2004 Midi
The sights, smells and sounds of India draw legions of travellers every year in awe of the changing terrain and countryside, but to truly experience the range and diversity of this huge country one needs to gaze into the many, spectacular residences, as rich and eclectic as the landscape that surrounds them. Indian Interiors provides a longing glimpse into these exotic abodes. India's visual culture is ruled by bright colours, religious decoration and the unrelenting heat of the sun, and designers have responded to this challenge in many ways over the centuries. With this book as guide, you can wander into the restored splendour of ancient Maharajas' palaces, enjoy living in houseboats on the lotus-covered lakes of Kashmir, or cool off in imposing colonial buildings built for British rulers wilting in the tropical heat. This is truly a world of contrasts, as we move from simple but beautifully hand-painted tribal huts to the L.A. influenced home of a Hollywood star, from a Buddhist house in Ladakh to the most original house designed in India by Le Corbusier. All the interiors here are lavishly photographed and documented.

4.0 out of 5 stars A great insight into a magical & colourful world 20 July 1999
By A Customer
I have seen this book at a friend's, and I'm definitely planning on borrowing it very soon. The pictures are intense and vibrant like the country they portray. The best thing, for me, is that for once this is a book that does not stop at the Maharajas' palaces; it covers those, but also peers through the keyhole (or curtain) at "real people's homes", showing the pride and care they have for their possessions, no matter how much or little they have. People may say it's a view that's too romantic; of course the houses have been cleaned and shined, but I felt this book was not just about pretty pictures (although there are plenty of these). It was about gaining a privileged view on a country as large, diverse and intriguing as a whole new world! (in short, I LIKED THIS BOOK!)

This book shows you a complete array of interiors from village huts to grand palaces; all in full colour photographs - from the houses of the poor to the mansions of the rich! In so doing it opens up & reveals the depth & diversity of Indian cultures from the perspective of the interior design of the dwellings. Fascinating to flick through on a lazy afternoon, particularly if you looking for inspiration for new ideas! Hardcover, Lots of quality pages (280 to be exact!), Great buy!
