Book Description

Travel guidebooks for the ultra curious, Approach Guides reveal a destination’s essence by exploring a compelling aspect of its cultural heritage: art, architecture, history, food, or wine.

Built by Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain monks as mountain retreats, India’s magnificent rock-cut sanctuaries, monasteries, and temples offer travelers an unrivaled cultural experience, transporting them back to the formative stage of art and architecture for India’s indigenous religions.

This Approach Guide serves as an ideal companion for travelers seeking a deeper understanding this fantastic landscape, profiling India’s three premier rock-cut religious sites: Ajanta (Buddhist), Elephanta (Hindu), and Ellora (a mixture of Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain).

For each location, we first offer an overview, introducing travelers to the trademark features of its paintings, reliefs, and architecture. We devote special attention to the stylistic features that distinguish one site from the next.

We then offer detailed profiles of the most impressive and representative caves at Ajanta, Elephanta, and Ellora, walking step-by-step through their distinctive artistic and architectural highlights. The overall goal of these featured cave profiles is provide travelers with what is most important, a framework for understanding each cave and what makes it special.

And along the way, this guide provides our personal tips at each location for getting the most from your experience.

This Approach Guide contains:
* Detailed profiles of 18 featured caves, hand-picked as the best examples of art and architecture in Ajanta, Elephanta, and Ellora.
* Over 130 high-resolution images — photos, floorplans, and illustrations — with color highlights that make visual identification of key features easier.
* High-level maps of each site to ease navigation and plan your itinerary.

3.0 out of 5 stars Basic guide without much life 16 Sept. 2012
By 101
Format:Kindle Edition
I bought this guide on my Kindle sitting in Mumbai airport on my way to Aurangabad.

It is reasonably straightforward to read with clear maps and pictures. It will guide you around the sites. However, my 3* Mark is because it provides NO CONTEXT to any of the historical sites the book covers. For me it was less important as I had read about it in many different books but to the casual visitor it will be very clinical.

5.0 out of 5 stars Hurray for Approach Guides! 9 July 2012
By John G. - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
OK -- these Approach Guides are just great! What a novel idea: a relatively short, well-written, easy-to-read travel companion which is useful whether you're actually going to a place, have come back from there, or are the proverbial arm-chair traveler. Each guide is right-on-point and sufficiently detailed, addressing a unique aspect of the art and architecture of a country or region, with plenty of photogrpahs, highlighted diagrams, maps and clear language. And all for a really reasonable price. I've purchased several Approach Guides -- for my Kindle, as pdf's, and to use on my iPad. I took three of the India Approach Guides with me on a recent trip there and they made for a perfect source of quick reference information while visting caves, temples and monuments. I've purchased a few other guides for places I'm considering visiting (Indonesia). And I've purchased a few for places I traveled to a long time ago in order to refresh my memory (Myanmar). I even got a thank you note from one of the authors after my first purchase! Good work, Approach Guides. You've come up with a brilliant and unique product.
5.0 out of 5 stars Essential guide for these UNESCO World Heritage sites! 16 Mar. 2015
By Francis G. Lu - Published on
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
In 1983, the Ajanta and Ellora caves were the first sites in India selected as UNESCO World Heritage sites along with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Ajanta has 26 Buddhist caves built in 2 waves: 2nd Century BC and 4th Century AD. Ellora has 34 caves built later that are Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain. This guide selects the best 9 from Ajanta and the best 8 from Ellora for wonderfully clear, succinct commentary with highlighted diagrams, closeup photographs, and author's tips to get the most from your visit. I visited in March 2015, spending 4 hours at Ajanta and 5.5 hours at Ellora. This guide was truly invaluable to helping me locate and appreciate the highlights of these beautiful and inspiring spiritual places. I have used the Approach Guides for Bagan; Angkor Wat; Morocco; Khajuraho; and Delhi, Agra, and the Taj Mahal, which I have reviewed on their Amazon product pages with great praise. Bravo!
