Product Description

Product Description

In the manner of a travelogue, India: The Peacock's Call is also a memoir, blending an account of the author's travels in India between 1997 and 2008 with reminiscences of her childhood in India. Thoughtful and evocative, it is a remarkably absorbing piece of travel writing. The author's story begins with an account of her return to India, thirty-five years after leaving. That departure, in 1963 when she was sixteen years old, marked the end of her family's long and intimate association with the sub-continent. Her return is thus emotional, and what comes through strongly in the narrative is the mixture of sentimental nostalgia, a longing to return, profound satisfaction at the reacquaintance with familiar places, and a sense of dislocation caused by all the things that have changed. The author's primary purpose is to describe India as it is now, using the anchorage of the past as a grounding and guiding device. This lends the account a triple historical depth: her own first-hand reminiscences, her knowledge oof her forefathers' experiences, and the broader, deeper history of India are all brought in to flesh out and deepen her account of her travels with her husband in the modern India. India: The Peacock's Call is a fascinating and deeply engaging guide to India starting with Delhi, and journeys through Rajasthan, to Agra, Uttar Pradesh, Kolkata and West Bengal; the author makes a return visit to Rajasthan and the Ganges and a north Indian childhood home ten years later in 2008. The sharp focus on one person and her deep personal association with India makes it much more informative than a standard travel guide. This is an up to date read for the thinking traveller to India.

From the Author

India is the Land of my birth and I have an enormous love for
this ancient splendid country with all her beauty but enormous challenges.
I still speak rusty Hindi/Urdu which makes my experiences perhaps more
interesting and adds a depth that might not be experienced by other western
travellers. This book was written at the urging of the Indian Government
and the Tamil Nadu State Government immediately post Asian Tsunami and I
have dedicated the book to All the Children from any nation that died as a
result of the tsunami and those who were so tragically orphaned and had
their lives changed for ever. This book encompasses the southern states of
India - Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka, Goa and then a
retrospective look at Delhi. I have written about Delhi in all three of my
books - my first India: The Peacocks's Call is about northern India and is
my 'take' on the land of my birth at the time of her 50th anniversary of
nationhood; this was published in 2002. The second is India: The Tiger's
Roar which was published in November 2004 and is about central India and
the urgent need to save the Tiger from extinction through poaching,
population pressure, greed and corruption, plus the usual Indian inertia.
Now my third book completes the trilogy and in this chronicle of a decade
finds the cup half full for India; she is one of the new great economic
superpowers of the 21st century. So much to offer, so much to see and
enjoy but with it all the challenges that the world's largest democracy
still has to try and overcome. Jai Hind! --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

India: the Peacock's call I found a short, easy, entertaining and informative read which gives a valuable insight into the northern half of India. Having traveled myself in most of the regions covered by the book, the itinery is a good choice giving the essence of each region and the book would be ideal for a first time visitor to India traveling on a medium budget with limited time.

Aline Dobbie gives a passionate but candid account of her travels linked in with easily digestable snippits of history and intriguing insights into her childhood days spent in India and the unique mix of colonial and native understanding this has given her. Clearly someone that understands India's complex culture. In her travels she meets and draws in indians from all walks of life and gives the reader an insight into the real India. From this aspect, the book is a good introduction to any potential travellers looking to understand the history and dynamics of India. For a good price, this is an easy read giving a good insight to northern India for the first time visitor.

I have just finished reading India: The Peacock's Call by Aline Dobbie. I enjoyed it so much and it only took me a couple of days to read. I have spent days afterwards dreaming about getting off my backside and touring aroung Northern India.

It is a delightful book, very worthwhile and full of historic substance. Very informative for someone thinking of taking a trip to Northern India. It also gave me a good insight to places you might not think to visit and also leaves one with a very reassuring and friendly view of the Indian people themselves.

All in all it was a lovely book to read, I take my hat off to Aline Dobbie. She did Northern India and its people proud and her true love of the country shone through. I do hope she decides to travel again to India or anywhere else for that matter!, I will be the first to snap up her book about her travels. She really did make me feel that I was on the journey with her and her husband Graham.

The book is an easy and untaxing read, which accounts the author's visit and childhood memories in northern India. It was a joy to read and even prompted me to visit a few of the places mentioned. On the whole, an entertaining and a good read, especially for a first time traveller to northern India.
