Product Description

Product Description

This mini paperback presents a photographic compilation of modern Indian craft, design and architecture, placed in the context of Indian history and traditions. It looks at the roots and themes of Indian craft and design from village society to Moghul palaces, and shows how these traditional forms are repeated in all the contemporary arts. Herbert Ypma, together with a team of photographers, travelled across India to bring together an array of images of buildings, textiles and ceramics. Together with text, these images provide an insight into the emergence of an aesthetic that truly combines the old with the new.

This is a wonderful, landmark book. Ypma successfully reinterprets traditional Indian design for modern contemporary living. The book provides knowledgeable updates on various Indian craft traditions (sectioned cleanly into distinct chapters)and traces the historical roots from which these traditions have evolved. Perfectly straddles the ancient and the contemporary without stereotyping India. The pictures are great but what really sets this book apart is the accompanying text which is nothing short of illuminating. A great introduction for those interested in Indian design as it is practiced today.

This is a charming, surprising little book. There is no overall theme other than the beauty of India. It is pocket size. There are excellent photos, some of surprisingly minute detail, all very well printed. There are also a number of great quotations about India and things Indian from all sorts of writers - Diana Vreeland, Mark Twain etc. which point the reader towards other interesting sources. I for one have started reading Mark Twain's travel writing as a result. A must for anyone considering a trip to India or for anyone who has been to India and wants to ballast their own impressions.

They say a picture speaks a thousand words and I can't help thinking this would be a better book with more pictures and fewer words. Ypma is the king of Hip Hotels who's been given a team of photographers and the chance to bounce around India gathering great images. The chapters try to propose themes which link the past architectural history to a few modern buildings in the final chapter - for me it's not a compelling narrative at all.
What I do like is that Ypma's photographers take the kind of pictures I take when I go to India each year but of course they do it better- or rather mostly they do it better. If you love shots of windows, doors, images shot through jaali screens and pictures of drab backgrounds lit up by brightly coloured turbans, then you WILL enjoy this book. But you may find the text as irksome as I did and find the themes a little tenuous.
