Book Description

24 Oct 2013
"This revised and expanded version of Eric Meola's 2008 India takes the reader on a journey through Mumbai, Rajasthan, Agra, Dungarpur, along desert roads, to the Ganges water's edge, including spectacular ruins, the Taj Mahal, and the Festival of Elephants, capturing the spectacle and vibrant colours of these ancient regions. INDIA is rapidly becoming one of the pre-eminent leaders of the twenty-first century. For more than a decade, Eric Meola has returned repeatedly to India, photographing the people, temples, landscapes, architecture, celebrations, and art of this uniquely exuberant and incredibly diverse country. Meola's journeys took him from the Himalayas and monasteries in the North to the temples of Tamil Nadu in the South, from the colour and pageantry of Rajasthan in the West to the tea plantations of Darjeeling in the East. Over 200 photographs (edited from more than 25,000 images) will fill this beautifully printed, large-format book. The photographs will be accompanied by dozens of essays, stories, and poems by contemporary and classical Indian writers."

5.0 out of 5 stars Krishna Smiles 29 Sep 2013
By Rob Atkins - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
"India is a river of color," wrote the great Indian photographer Raghubir Singh. That river flows a bit deeper and wider in this revised and expanded edition of Eric Meola's India in Word and Image, and it flows with a current that will sweep you away.

About thirty pages of new photography have been added, enhancing the already incredible array of images. A gaggle of boys plays soccer with the Taj Mahal looming in the background, their ball suspended in air as graceful as the temple's domes; bolts of vermillion fabric hang to dry near Jaipur, creating an abstract-expressionist tableau; the Jal Mahal floats like a lotus upon Man Sagar Lake on a still evening. These are astonishing moments that Eric Meola has a penchant for finding, each image infused with color that heightens the emotional content.

Like the first edition of India, the book benefits from a confluence of things that lift it into the stratosphere of fine publishing: remarkable photography by a master of color, elegant design, superb production quality, and the inclusion of writings by some of the most eloquent literary voices of India, past and present.

India in Word and Image is a remarkable achievement. Somewhere, Lord Krishna is smiling.

5.0 out of 5 stars India: Word and Image is a cavalcade of color ... 5 July 2014
By Daniel G. Madigan - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Hardcover
India: Word and Image is a cavalcade of color and poetic inspiration. I have been to India many times and this is what you see, apart from the gargantuan poverty, religion decked out in tremendous color, defying the fates.odds whatever.

It's all there in reality, the architecture, the carvings, paintings and the many the temples that contain these works of art. the Taj Mahal, Agra, ..it's all there and now it's here in this magnificent book.

Buy it and then visit India..see how these diverse people deal with outrageous fortune.
