Review

"This book is an excellent resource. It is clearly written and well laid out, with good cross-referencing between chapters and a multitude of illustrative examples. [...] it should be read be anyone thinking about taking up indexing, and also by editors, especially those who think that an index is an extravagant luxury!" (Information World Review, London, Dec. 2001) "I would thoroughly recommend this book to trainees and indexers alike. It is a worthy addition to any reference colletion." (Copyright, London, Nov./Dec. 2003)

I am a freelance indexer of books and Pat Booth's book sits next to my desk. I am constantly using it as a quick reference the latest BS standards for headings, subheadings, names and titles etc. It is also a very good summary of what an index is meant to do, why it is important that every non-fiction book should have one and what a good index is like. Read it and you might want to be an indexer too. It's a great profession!

This is an indexing textbook with a bias towards an UK audience, which is a welcome addition to the reference shelves of trainees and experienced practitioners alike. It provides useful, practical advice and explanations and expands on the work of the British and International Indexing Standards.

There are detailed explanations of the types of indexes and the types of indexable documents, with numerous examples to illustrate discussions within the text.

The book is well organised and clearly laid out, with each subject having been well researched and thoughtfully presented.

The index is well organised and clearly presented with a thoroughly comprehensible explanatory note. This book is a worthy addition to the collections of both trainees and experienced indexers.
