Product Description

Product Description

Hope and Michael celebrate their first anniversary together with rain-soaked, drink-fuelled sex that results in conception. She's a librarian at the local university; he's a stock controller at a plastics company with a fascination for the migration of the Monarch butterfly and for his best friend's girlfriend, the copper-fringed Evette. Hope and Michael view the nine months ahead with honesty, anxiety, duplicity and excitement but, most of all, very differently form one another indeed.

Like a butterfly emerging from a chrysalis, the main strands in this novel open out slowly - but still manage to take you by surprise. This is a touching love story, a period of gestation, a tale of betrayal and commitment, a matrix of synchronicities, an everyday account of ordinary mixed up folk, and a plunge into the dark places of history. Lyrical touches and observations make you feel like you know the characters from the beginning - and if you're familiar with the Midlands it feels like you know the locations from the beginning too. But everything shifts, everything changes - this novel is indeterminate in the best sense of the word. Read it!

-Easy reading. but at its best.
-Utterly addictive reading, i couldn't put it down! lots of different stories intertwined into a cleverly thought out plot.
-The unique writing style gives an in depth 3D view into all of the characters views and how they think, making you feel like you are completely involved.
-A definite must read. and yes that phrase seems to be thrown around a lot these days. but this book renews that phrase!
-To start with the amount of characters can seem a bit confusing. but the brilliant descriptions make you feel like they have been your friend for years!
-really loved this book. will definitely read it again!

i recommend it to everyone!

This one's a keeper 14 April 2010
Format:Paperback
Indeterminate Creatures follows friends and relations over a 9 month period, and a baby is born... yet that's not the whole story really. In amongst the anxieties about pregnancy and parenthood, temptation and butterflies, is an understated mystery, triggered by the discovery of an old letter stuck to the back of a painting. (It makes you want to gently peel the backing paper off every old picture you see, and have a peep just in case!) There's a distinctive bunch of characters, all real in their oddness, hopelessness and ordinariness - and a fine ending that makes you smile rather than fling the book across the room!
