Amazon.co.uk Review

If you’ve got your high definition television set up, and your Blu-ray player or Playstation 3 at the ready, then surely home cinema demo material rarely comes in better shape than Independence Day.

The spectacular 1996 blockbuster stars Will Smith in the early part of his movie career and, of course, tells the tale of invaders from other worlds bringing mighty ships to the Earth. And particularly in the first half, Independence Day wrings so much tension and style from their arrival that few films have equalled it since. The sheer spectacle of set pieces such as the blowing up of the White House, or the massive battle in the skies, simply deserves to be seen and enjoyed in high definition.

Independence Day, of course, does go a bit daft as it goes about wrapping up its simple-yet-compelling premise, but it’s really very hard not to forgive it. So ambitious were the effects at the time that they still stand up now, and as far as science fiction blockbusters go, this remains one of the finest in recent memory.

Of course, high definition does it wonders. The film looks razor-sharp, and coupled with a punchy sound mix, Independence Day is quite superb demo material. That it’s also a fun blockbuster too is an added, and very welcome treat. --Jon Foster

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. -- Tom Keogh

4.0 out of 5 stars Great presentation, but where's the extras??, 15 Feb 2010

If you're thinking of adding this to your blu-ray collection then you've no doubt seen the film itself many times.

The DTS-Master Audio lossless track is stunning. Absolutely sensational and worth the upgrade alone should you have the equipment to be able to showcase lossless sound.

The video is excellent. Plenty of detail and light years ahead of any DVD version you may own. Pretty much the best the film is ever going to look.

Where the disc disappoints slightly is in the extras. Only some of the wealth of features from the previous DVD releases have made it to blu-ray.
There's no making of material that I remember enjoying in the past.
The commentaries are still there, and there's games and the original trailers in HD.

Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of special edition next year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the film, well this is definitely worth picking up for a tenner.

One of the better blockbusters of the 90's presented very nicely in high definition,

3.0 out of 5 stars Not a showcase for blu-ray, 17 April 2009
Despite the Amazon blurb I was very disappointed by the picture quality.
Not that's it's bad but it's just not as crisp as many of the other films in the blu-ray catalogue.

As for the film itself it's standard popcorn fare with some great special effects (somehow reminiscent of Thunderbirds) from the days when computers were only used for the things that couldn't be done with miniatures.
Overall, I did find the film a little dated and Bill Pullman does little to convince the audience that he is the leader of the free world but it's a good ride with some entertaining moments.

There are worst movies out there for a tenner but there are much better ones too (Master and Commander, Hellboy, Casino Royale, The Day After Tomorrow).

This is one of those DVDs I'll watch once and put it on the back shelf. If you already have this on DVD then don't bother.

3.0 out of 5 stars Switch off your brain and enjoy the action, 3 July 2007

This review is from: Independence Day [1996] [DVD] (DVD)
This film is not for those looking for something deep and meaningfull it is very predictable and shallow but the action and effects are very good.

There is not a great deal can be said about this film, it is fun to watch and the acting is ok.

This film has one main drawback to anyone outside USA - it has a bit too much 'God bless America' in it. The film implies that the rest of the world is completely helpless until the 'mighty' US of A comes to the rescue of us all! however if you can ignore this then the film becomes an ok summer blockbuster action film but is never more than that!

Overall this is very average and i would only recomend this to fans of the Genre or Will Smith
