From Amazon.co.uk

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

3.0 out of 5 stars Fresh Prince Saves The World 25 Aug 2011
Format:DVD
A 'B' movie made on an 'A' movie budget. It's not deep and it certainly ain't clever but it looks good and there's a mothership load of excitement.

By Mark Barry HALL OF FAME TOP 50 REVIEWER VINE VOICE
Format:Blu-ray
At the time of release (1996) the jaw-dropping destruction of American cities featured in "Independence Day" seemed like the cutting edge of special effects (they were). But in 2014 "Man Of Steel" or indeed any of the "Transformer" films have gone so much further – that what once seemed brill - now looks tame in comparison. But that doesn’t stop "ID" from being great fun – even if the Fresh Prince of Bel Air saving the world with a cigar in his mouth and 'attitude' stretches belief just a tad…

Still if you're a fan of the movie (or Roland Emmerich lover like I am) - note that the 'US' BLU RAY on 20th Century Fox is REGION A LOCKED - so it will not play on our machines unless they're chipped to be 'all regions' (which few are).

Stick with the UK BLU RAY individual title or 3-film bundles - and you won't have Region-Coding trashing your exploding building count...

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice one... 22 Jan 2008
Format:Blu-ray
...for damning the film because of a technical issue. To the chap who gave the film 1 star, you realise everyone will see that, for some reason Independance Day has been rated a surprisingly low score? And you've done this because Amazon didn't tell you it wasn't US-player compatible? Grow up! Post your comments in the forums, and email Amazon. I'm all for the trade descriptions act, but putting people off the film because yours doesn't work?
To balance it out, I think the film is great, it's not the smartest of films, but who cares? It's from that era when everything WIll Smith touch turned to gold, with this, Men In Black and Wild WIld West. Ok, not Wild Wild West, but nevermind. A classic 'Hollywood Blockbuster', re-jigged in Shiny-Hi-Def-Vision (c), which ticks all the right boxes on the basic, bright colours and loud noises film checklist.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great presentation, but where's the extras?? 15 Feb 2010
Format:Blu-ray
If you're thinking of adding this to your blu-ray collection then you've no doubt seen the film itself many times.

The DTS-Master Audio lossless track is stunning. Absolutely sensational and worth the upgrade alone should you have the equipment to be able to showcase lossless sound.

The video is excellent. Plenty of detail and light years ahead of any DVD version you may own. Pretty much the best the film is ever going to look.

Where the disc disappoints slightly is in the extras. Only some of the wealth of features from the previous DVD releases have made it to blu-ray.
There's no making of material that I remember enjoying in the past.
The commentaries are still there, and there's games and the original trailers in HD.

Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of special edition next year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the film, well this is definitely worth picking up for a tenner.

One of the better blockbusters of the 90's presented very nicely in high definition,

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Improvement 11 Sep 2010
By Bigbrit
Format:Blu-ray
What really annoys me with these reviews of Blu-Rays versions of older movies is that people talk about how good or bad the movie itself it is rather than the quality of the Blu-Ray conversion!! Of course we like the movie otherwise we wouldn't be looking at buying the Blu-Ray version!! Anyway, that's my rant over, now on to my review...
I am totally impressed with the Blu-ray version of Independence Day. The picture quality is amazing, down to now seeing sweat stains that I have never noticed on previous viewings.
The sound is fantastic as well.
It is a great improvement and I am so happy I made the purchase of this excellent movie. Well worth the cost.
A must for any fan.

3.0 out of 5 stars A great story but ok film 26 Nov 2006
Format:DVD
I read the book version before seeing the film and was quite impressed but the film changed a lot and not to the films credit. Firstly, the biggest change was the Independence Day speech part before the final attack above Area 51. In the book the Americans have gathered together anything that can fly, from P-51 Mustangs, Phantoms, Starfighters, Sabres, Harriers, F 111s, F 14s, Migs, etc and these are to be used on a suicide run to distract the Aliens from the main attack of the F 18s. Most of these pilots are very depressed and fatalistic so the US President gives them his great Independence day speech to give them courage and hope and it works. But in the film it just comes across as a bit of over the top jingoistic spin and then swarms of F 18 go in to the attack.

Secondly it lacked something, perhaps a ground element, I think the film would have been ten times better with Alien AFVs (armoured fighting vehicles) attacking the base on the ground, pushing back the human defenders: USAF men, Police, Soldiers, civilians, Marines, National Guard, Secret Service, etc being pushed back in to the base but fighting fiercely. (See 55 Days in Peking to see what I mean). These AFVs could have been stopped ultimately by the computer virus too.

Also, what is with all the Ground controllers shouting frantically and loudly in to their radios at the pilots?? I am sure the last thing a pilot travelling at 500mph+ in a dog fight needs is a ground controller shouting down his ear! The director should have re-watched Star Wars, remember when the X wings and Y Wings are attacking the Death Star and the ground controllers are quietly waiting and watching? You could feel the tension.

This director writer team has a gift of getting a great idea and making it ok, remember Stargate?

Great special effects, great cast, good story but poor direction and realisation. Watch and enjoy but dont expect a lot!
