In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) Format:Blu-ray
If you're thinking of adding this to your blu-ray collection then you've no doubt seen the film itself many times.
The DTS-Master Audio lossless track is stunning. Absolutely sensational and worth the upgrade alone should you have the equipment to be able to showcase lossless sound.
The video is excellent. Plenty of detail and light years ahead of any DVD version you may own. Pretty much the best the film is ever going to look.
Where the disc disappoints slightly is in the extras. Only some of the wealth of features from the previous DVD releases have made it to blu-ray.
There's no making of material that I remember enjoying in the past.
The commentaries are still there, and there's games and the original trailers in HD.
Whilst I wouldn't be surprised to see some sort of special edition next year to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the film, well this is definitely worth picking up for a tenner.

Despite the Amazon blurb I was very disappointed by the picture quality.
Not that's it's bad but it's just not as crisp as many of the other films in the blu-ray catalogue.
As for the film itself it's standard popcorn fare with some great special effects (somehow reminiscent of Thunderbirds) from the days when computers were only used for the things that couldn't be done with miniatures.
Overall, I did find the film a little dated and Bill Pullman does little to convince the audience that he is the leader of the free world but it's a good ride with some entertaining moments.
There are worst movies out there for a tenner but there are much better ones too (Master and Commander, Hellboy, Casino Royale, The Day After Tomorrow).
This is one of those DVDs I'll watch once and put it on the back shelf. If you already have this on DVD then don't bother.

Just bought and viewed this release on BluRay (already own it on DVD). Was very disappointed with video quality on this disc unlike all the other BluRay's I own. Quite simply, it couldn't have been filmed in HD quality, and shows noticeable picture noise throughout (Panasonic PF9 65" 1080P 1:1 pixel mapping so can't get better picture chain quality).
Having said that, the Audio in Dolby DTS HD cetainly is better than the ordinary DVD version (again, through a high end home cinema system).
So... I give it only 3 stars because of the picture quality, and would warn people to be wary of old catalogue releases on BluRay

It's a Bluray. So the sound is great especially with a subwoofer on. The picture quality is fantastic and clear.
