From Amazon.co.uk

In Independence Day, a scientist played by Jeff Goldblum once actually had a fistfight with a man (Bill Pullman) who is now president of the United States. That same president, late in the film, personally flies a jet fighter to deliver a payload of missiles against an attack by extraterrestrials. Independence Day is the kind of movie so giddy with its own outrageousness that one doesn't even blink at such howlers in the plot. Directed by Roland Emmerich, Independence Day is a pastiche of conventions from flying-saucer movies from the 1940s and 1950s, replete with icky monsters and bizarre coincidences that create convenient shortcuts in the story. (Such as the way the girlfriend of one of the film's heroes--played by Will Smith--just happens to run across the president's injured wife, who are then both rescued by Smith's character who somehow runs across them in alien-ravaged Los Angeles County.) The movie is just sheer fun, aided by a cast that knows how to balance the retro requirements of the genre with a more contemporary feel. --Tom Keogh

5.0 out of 5 stars Nice one... 22 Jan 2008
Format:Blu-ray
...for damning the film because of a technical issue. To the chap who gave the film 1 star, you realise everyone will see that, for some reason Independance Day has been rated a surprisingly low score? And you've done this because Amazon didn't tell you it wasn't US-player compatible? Grow up! Post your comments in the forums, and email Amazon. I'm all for the trade descriptions act, but putting people off the film because yours doesn't work?
To balance it out, I think the film is great, it's not the smartest of films, but who cares? It's from that era when everything WIll Smith touch turned to gold, with this, Men In Black and Wild WIld West. Ok, not Wild Wild West, but nevermind. A classic 'Hollywood Blockbuster', re-jigged in Shiny-Hi-Def-Vision (c), which ticks all the right boxes on the basic, bright colours and loud noises film checklist.

It's a Bluray. So the sound is great especially with a subwoofer on. The picture quality is fantastic and clear.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loud and Back With A Vengeance - Blu Ray Review 19 May 2013
Format:Blu-ray
Already have this on DVD, and like another review I was initially disappointed that it was the original cinema shorter version, no Special Edition here nor the option which is a bit strange when you can buy Close Encounters and get three versions on the disc. But then, you know what? It is the better version.

Like Stargate, ID4 was edited the way it was edited for cinema for a reason. The deleted scenes weren't really that good anyway. Having seen the film at the cinema on release the added scenes never really added anything.

One thing that is noticeable is that despite it's age, it has a really good picture quality. But over that, the knock out punch is the sound. This is a LOOOUDDD Blu Ray - and is really worth the upgrade from DVD for the sound alone.

The film? Yes, you can argue it's USA saves the world, but the fact is of all the 'alien invasion' films that there have been over the years, this one delivers. And yes, the US saves the world but the European director, Roland Emmerich, certainly spends a lot of screen time destroying most of the country in the process.

Almost 20 years on and ID Forever Part 1 AND 2 have been announced...............

My main whinge about this film is it turns from a great science fiction into how America saves the world.
