LKJ is a poet and his very strong, nearly violent lyrics, yet descriptive of reality, really transmit a true vibe in the heart and soul of the one hearing his words. His music is great, and the dub versions of several songs (at least 8) are terrific ! there's no doubt about it ! Purchase this album an' feel irie cause Linton Kwesi is here fe we !!!!

Essential listening for anyone who has lived in the grittier parts of London and has any interest in politics at all. Poetry and dub - an amazing combination.

If you were an immigrant or child of an immigrant growing up in the 70s then Linton Kwesi Johnson was an important figure to you. Culturally racism was pretty much acceptable within society, even mainstream entertainment promoted some dodgy values. We were told to accept the situation and turn the other cheek, until you heard LKJ. I cannot truly convey what an important figure he is, he literally politicised black and immigrant youth loudly proclaiming a refusal of the status quo and a manifesto where point 1 was 'Fight Dem Back!'

He also made some incredible albums. When it comes to reggae this is the real deal, proper roots radical and dub. Great bass heavy instrumentals over which he recited his poetry in an authentic black patois. The words survive alone as poetry and the music alone as roots or dub, together, well let's call it the LKJ experience. This cd proves to be great value, all of the 'Forces Of Victory', 'Bass Culture' and 'Making History' albums are included along with many dub versions! Definitely worth the price, especially as 'Making History' is generally only available as a high priced import. Basically you're getting at least three of his albums plus 'LKJ in Dub Vol.1'. Too many classic tracks here to single any out, if you have this cd along with his debut 'Dread Beat An Blood' you will own a pretty comprehensive LKJ collection. Listening to these tracks shows how history repeats itself with unrest and uprising but let's not forget they are musically accomplished and the lyrics and delivery are awesome. Why this man isn't as big as Bob Marley I will never understand, this is as real and authentic as reggae gets.
