I must have read this book half a dozen times and each time it makes my skin crawl. It is one of the most atmospheric and gripping horror/who-dunnits I've ever encountered. And it starts as it means to go on right from the word GO. Donnelly has not only crafted a darned good tale, he writes well too, and at no time does the action drag or meander - you will be on the edge of your seat page after page as the horrifying truth about what is happening emerges. Brilliant. One of my very favourite books. I borrowed it from the library first time around as a sort of pot-luck choice, but I had barely got through the first chapter before I was hooked and started searching for my own copy. I have read and enjoyed some of Donnelly's other books but this one is by far his best, for sheer creepiness and credibility.

Incubus is the first book by Joe Donnelly I read. I read it about 15 years ago and since then I've read it six times. It is one of the most imaginative and gripping books I've ever read, and I'm a crazy book worm.
I have never really been a fan of horror. Not because I don't like to be 'scared' but because I find most horror stories unbelievable and down-right stupid. This was different. It's not just horror, it's a psychological thriller. And it's not just a psychological thriller, it's your worst nightmare, your worst dream.
Even when you've put the book down you still think about the characters, and what happened to them. For years I've wished he'd write a sequel to Incubus, but I guess that would ruin its dark magic.
I cannot rate this book enough. It's sick, twisted, terrifying, gripping and truly compelling.
