New, corrected pressing available,
By
This review is from: The Incredible String Band (Audio CD)
Update: In response to my criticism of this reissue for beeing heavily distorted, I was made aware that the distortions would be corrected on a new pressing of the album and that owners of the distorted initial pressing can write to Fledg'ling records and request an exchange. I did so and David Suff kindly sent me the new pressing. The good news: the new pressing indeed sounds much better than the old one, most of the annoying high-pitched distortions in the vocal- and whiste-parts are gone - the bad news is that some of the distortions, especially in the transient parts are still left. It seems that they are part of the master tapes (maybe some defect due to age/humidity) and Simon Heyworth did his best to filter them out for this new pressing, which makes this remaster finally sound listenable (but contrary to the other Fledg'ling remasters stil inferior to the Elektra version). To know if you have the new pressing, just listen to the initial whiste part of Track 3. If it sounds distorted, I'm sure you'll get a replacement from the label.
Original Review: I'm not reviewing the album here, which is almost beyond critizism. I'm reviewing this particular remaster. Fledg'ling records has recently reissued the first four ISB albums, all of them featuring nice packaging and a comprehensive booklet with song texts and liner notes. The sound quality on this album, hoewever, is horrible - far, far worse than the Warner reissue. All the vocal and whistle tracks are heavily(!) distorted, which makes the whole album totaly unbearable to listen to on headphones or a decent stereo. Something must have gone very wrong during mastering here - avoid this one and buy the other three instead.

Here is how to tell if your copy is fixed or not,

This review is from: The Incredible String Band (Audio CD)
As mentioned in other reviews, the first pressing of the CD did not sound very good at all and had some technical problems. The music label went back and corrected those problems on a second pressing. Here is how to tell the difference between the two versions, which otherwise are identical in packaging. Look at the inner matrix code for the following numbers, on the bottom side of the CD itself:
Defective pressing: W11207 Replacement pressing that is fixed: W71408

wonderful,

This review is from: The Incredible String Band (Audio CD)
I bought this album in december 2010 and to my ears the remastered sound is excellent throughout and, as usual with Fledg'ling, the presentation is excellent. The album itself is truly exceptional. Nobody else made music remotely like this in 1966 with the possible exception of Donovan. Some ISB fans might not like this comparison much, but I'm referring to the sheer originality of the lyrics and melodies. Curiously it's Mike Heron's work that stands out for me here. All his songs are great. Who could ever forget the lovely swirling fiddle introduction to "Maybe Someday". That being said my favourite track on the album is Williamson's Dandelion Blues". The whole album is beautifully sung and superbly played. Absolutely essential
