A gray whale makes the 16,000-kilometre round trip from California to the polar waters of Alaska, a western diamond-back rattlesnake slithers across the Arizona desert, and in the final journey a monarch butterfly, weighing one-fiftieth of an ounce, makes an annual flight from Canada to Mexico.
